OT - So Mad!! Need to Vent
Im on our social committee here at work and make it a point not to forget about people even if they're not in the office. I make sure there's a card waiting for them at their desk when they get back. If they're here, we'll decorate their desk. No cake though - my suggestion. We have WAY too much food in this office as it is!
I'll be honest - Im expecting at least 1 call when I have surgery and I'd be very disappointed if it didnt come from my boss.

MY RNY DIDN'T FAIL ME - I FAILED IT.
I think that if it is the custom to do something for everyone's b-day then you shouldn't have been forgotten just because you were off for surgery. I mean you were gone a measily 2 weeks, not like you took an extended leave of absense. I am the manager of a small office and most of the staff are out in the field and hardly come to the office. Birthdays they get a card from me and for surgeries I have sent flowers. If something similar has been the custom in your office then you are quite right to be upset. Is thre someone in the office that you are especially close with that you could mention casually because I'm sure there will be a lot of red faces when the word gets around that you were forgotten.
