Thanks Karen, I really appreciate your words. I just feel devastated right now and it will be better once I've gotten over the initial disappointment. Who knows - maybe the blood test will  come out positive. It is what it is and I just have to deal with it, right?

Hi Deb

First let me say that I am sorry that you have had such a significant health issue come to light so unexpectedly.

Remember WLS is a tool to get healthy, not a golden ticket and certainly not the easy way out.  Not meant as a dig but a statement of fact.  That being said, while difficult to obtain and maintain, losing weight prior to surgery is possible.  Perhaps not on your own or you would have accomplished that already right!

I have read time and time again on this forum about people who have made the changes in their diet while "going through the process" and as a pleasant side effect of actually losing weight.  In fact some have been warned that if they continue they might disqualify themselves from having the WLS (although the validity of such a statement is questionable).

So here is my little irritating pearl of wisdom.  Start walking the walk.  Keep a food diary, wean yourself off of the "devil" foods, ask your cardiologist to refer you to a registered dietitian and start walking.

All things are possible if you believe they are. . .hang tough

Hi Oknee - I totally agree with you. WLS is definitely a tool to help us, not a free pass to Paradise.  If I have to, I will lose the weight, one way or another. I've given up certain "trigger" foods already, switched to decaf tea and have already been losing weight. The food diary is a great idea - I will start that too. Exercise is difficult for me as I have back problems that make it difficult to walk very much - maybe half a block is the best I can do, but I've started an upper body exercise program using a DVD I bought to help my COPD. I'm hoping that it might help a bit. I'm going to also see a physiotherapist to see if he can help with some type of exercise suggestions for me with my limited mobility. Thanks for your suggestions - I do appreciate them!

Deb. . .good for you for making a start, don't forget the registered dietician and consider walking in a swimming pool as this takes most of the stress of the weightbearing joints.

Good idea, Oknee! Yep, I'm seeing the dietician on June 20, or at least I'm supposed to. I wonder if someone will cancel my appointments? Oh well, just wait and see I guess. I have a pool & some ankle weights that I just bought for extra resistance while walking in the pool - I like water exercises so that I can get cool when I start to sweat. Thanks for the ideas.

I had my family doctor tell me 2 weeks ago that if my BMI was below 40 at the time of my first weigh in at the Guelph clinic they (Dr.Reed and team) would not allow me to continue the process.

Once you have you initial weigh in at the clinic you can go below the 40 BMI. they dont care if your BMI was 55 at the time of referral and in the 12 months you waited you were able to loose weight.. to bad so sad... he said he has 1 paitent be disqualified for this exact reason...

Just to clarify Dee, I had read your post regarding this(a week ago maybe?), and was not questioning that you had been told this, simply the validity of your family doctor's statement.  I see from your statement above that you have done further research and validated what your family doctor told you. . .thanks for sharing this as it gives credence to what your family doctor told you.

Oh Dee, what a situation! I mean, they want us to lose weight on our own while we're waiting for surgery, yet, if we end up below a BMI of 40, we're out of the game? That's so frustrating! It will make people afraid to lose too much weight before their initial weigh-in. Hmmm....good luck to all of us, I guess.

to some to loose a bit before the first weigh in is no biggie... but my bmi is 44 so i have to be careful. I can get some of the weight off but keeping it there is the kick in the pants

I too have heart difficulties, but it was my cardiologist *****ferred me for surgery.. I know it's hard but wait and see what your cardio says.  All thru my wait for surgery I was so afraid that I would be refused because of it, but I did just fine.  I hope you will too.
