I didn't realize that Voltaren was an NSAID - even though it's topical.  I'll have to ask about that.  Thanks.

I saw another post a while back that Dr. Anvari cleared someone to use topical NSAIDs, because such a small amount that is absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream will end up having any effect on the stomach - so check with your surgeon but it should be ok.

Beth,

I can so relate with you I was taking Naproxen for my monthly to help with the pain.  I also have sciatia in my hip in OMG since I have stopped taking the NSAIDS it's killing me!!!  I was told to stop in May after meeting the dietician.

I am coping but I really hope after surgery things will get better on there own.
Your almost there keep you chin up it will get better!!!

Voltaren is an NSAID... i use but i would never suggest anyone use it without clearing it with their surgeon clinic because it does have a stomach bleeding risk. i decided i will ris****assionally. Am i smart by doing that - actually I'm not sure.

Non NSAID pain killers - of course there is our friend tylenol, but you can also get tylenol with coedine (ask for at the pharmacy counter for the generic version of tylenol 1 - you can go brand but the cost difference is huge). Those are the two easiest. Others i know of are prescription.
Sometimes the best support  you can get isn't all purple puddles and pink rainbows.

Beth be careful with the Voltaren Cream. My ortho put me on Voltaren by mouth(I'm allowed Nsaids so no worries) and they about killed my gut.  I asked the pharmacist if I could use the Voltaren cream and he said that it still could affect the stomach so to be very careful and he actually suggested I not even bother with it since my stomach had been that sensitive to the pills. I just went through a 3 week bout of sciatica and the chiro was my best friend for those 3 weeks.  I went 3 times a week and had the pressure point treatment for 30 minutes each time. Pain is completely gone now.  Make sure you check with St. Joe's before using the gel in case it's not allowed prior to surgery.  I bet even your pharmacist would know if the gel would be allowed before any surgery.

I've had to stop my NSAIDs too.  I have rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia, so it's been a challenge.  I was told not to use any topical or injectable NSAIDs, as they enter the blood stream and do affect the stomach.  I would definitely check with your surgeon.  I find that Tylenol Arthritis is helpful, although I had a "medication stick" when I took it shortly before bed time and had to stay up for a few hours while it dissolved.  As a topical pain reliever, I use Lakota; it's NSAID-free.  Good luck!
