First Unsupportive Comments from Family
Precisely why I didn't tell very many people before I had my surgery, I didn't want to hear any negative responses cause I wasn't sure how I would respond, especially at work, and I really didn't want anyone to put a damper on my excitement of finally getting this help,
Hmm .... just realized I can't tell anyone to kiss my fat ass anymore. lmao
Cheers

I see it as promarily an issue of ignorance. That's why I've taken the approach of directly confronting the ignorant comment and explaining why it's false. I hope that in time this appraoch might actually change some opinions/minds. I have an older sister who I haven't yet told about my surgery (I decided to wait until I have a surgery date before I tell most people, but my husband, parents and in-laws know) but I have broached the subject if WLS with her and I know her opinion is negative. She has struggled with her weight since a teenager and has done all kinds of fad diets and thinks it's as simple as "calories in - calories out" and considers herself an expert in nutrition. She thinks it's extreme and risky and something that people who can lose weight through other means shouldn't do. I asked her about all the times she has lost weight (over 50lbs) and then just gained it back and what she thought the problem was. She thinks its just poor willpower and not enough exercise. Self-loathing fat people are the worst, often worse than the skinny *****es!
Sometimes people who love us express their fear with negative comments. They don't want to 'lose' us, so they try to talk us out of it. They base their responses on poor, inaccurate information, if any at all.
If you decide to give her the straight goods, and she's still negative, then there's not much else you can do. You'll have to show her the proof of it afterwards.

You are not alone there. I had the same thing. What I did is took them to the orientation. The ones who did not want to hear it I told them to sign something they will look after my family and finances after I pass away. All my family now understand why I am doing this because I want to live. You will always hey someone who does not understand why you are doing this. It usually the over weight meat and potatos family. Just remember, you are doing this for yourself because you want to live. Keep up the good work.
Well. Soon she'll be able to kiss your flat ass. LOL
