OT - Stomach Pain
VSG on 01/25/12
I haven't had my surgery yet so this pain is not related to that but I have been really suffering off and on now for the past couple of days. I have this awful pain in the right side of my body (stomach and back) that gets practically unbearable at times. I feel absolutely disgusting when it happens - like I could throw up all over but I never do. I called and made an appointment with my doctor but it's upcoming and I have to wait it out...thing is today I feel blah again when yesterday I felt normal!! It's not my appendix because I had that taken out when I was 16 years old. Any insight anyone?
Are you getting enough liquid/water in? Dehydration can show up as back pain because that's where the kidneys are.

Surgery Date: February 28/20.
MY RNY DIDN'T FAIL ME - I FAILED IT.
Gallbladder maybe? I had mine taken out 15 years ago, so I don't remember exactly what it felt like, but it was *really* bad.
While you're waiting for the Dr, keep a journal of when it happens. Include this type of stuff
- When did you eat last, what was it?
- What were you doing?
- How long did it last?
All that stuff should be helpful to figure out what's going on.

If the pain at the base of your ribs or lower? If its significantly lower it could be gas or a GI bug, and you could see if it goes away in a day or two. If its higher, under the ribs and radiating to the back and up toward your breast and shoulder, it is likely to be gallbladder related. Are the pains worse at night or after eating a meal with fat? If the painful area more sore if you press on the area? Definitely start writing down and keeping track of this stuff and the doc will probably send you for an ultrasound when you see him. The good news is, if it is your gallbladder, they can just yank it out when you have your RNY done! One thing to watch out for - if you start to notice the white of your eyes get yellowish (jaundice), you get a high fever or the pain is unbearable, go to an ER.
Have you been checked for gallbladder or kidney stones? You should look into this and get this possibly resolved now rather than wait on it.

Hey Pinkjellybean,
I concur with the gallbladder. The pain you describe was the same for me - right side stomach and back and I even took myself to emerge it was so painful. Also, your description that you feel you want to throw up ... but don't - exactly like me. Gallstones are apparently common with weight loss (I had lost 50 lbs over three years due to feeling ill when pregnant). My doctor said that changes in diet created changes in the consistency of your bile?? and stones could form. I was also told by a nurse that gallbladder issues were more common with three f's - fat, fair and forty - I fit the "fat" and "fair" but I was just over 30. They wouldn't operate on me until I was a month free of attacks as they wanted the inflammation gone before surgery. Get it checked out and good luck!
