POST menopausal hair loss issues..

OK.. need some input from any WLS gals who are post menopausal and have experienced
hair loss/hair thinning issues PRE surgery and of course post surgery.

I noticed about a year before surgery, that I was starting to lose hair right up front and centre.. and my hair color is very dark brown, almost black, naturally, with very little gray yet. I will be 59 in a couple of months. I do NOT color my hair.
I spoke with my family doctor about my concerns about thinning hair, PRE surgery, and he was not overly concerned.. (mind you, he is bald, and young!) and he sort of pooh poohed the issue and said to wait and see how things are post surgery.. if it worsens etc.

Well Thursday, during an appt with the doc, I brought up the issue of the INCREASING thinning of the hair up front, and asked if there was any topical (applied to scalp) medication that was
successful in regrowing hair, even a peach fuzz type hair would be welcomed to lessen the shine on the scalp that is so evident when a light overhead shines on me.. he said.. perhaps
we could try ROGAINE FOR WOMEN.. and he ordered it.. but cautioned me that it would likely not be covered by my Green Shield prescription insurance plan..  I assured him that if I thought it would work I would be willing to fork over the dough to pay for it.

Took the script to the pharmacy Friday.. the pharmacist said.. NO SUCH THING AS ROGAINE for WOMEN! and consulted the CPS (compendium of Pharmaceuticals in Canada.. THE bible for pharmacists to refer to for drug info in Canada).. only Rogaine. So.. I got a package off the shelf as it is over the counter.. and its $68 +HST for a box of the stuff.. but.. the box clearly labels on the back NOT FOR USE BY WOMEN!
so.. am back to square one.

I googled ROGAINE for women+Canada.. and got info that the medicine does exist but is NOT approved for use in Canada.. so looks like if I want to pursue this issue further, will have to shop for it in USA. However when I googled Post menopausal hair loss+women the info I got from a few websites was not very encouraging for success for any ROGAINE or similar medication applied to the scalp to try to stimulate regrowth of fine hair on scalp...(what I refer to as peach fuzz hair).
I would be happy with fine hair on scalp to lessen the glare that is so evident when the light above my head shines down and reveals a shiny scalp!

So.. I am asking.. do any of you have similar issues with post menopausal hair thinning or hair loss that results in OBVIOUS shiny bare spots on scalp.. mostly up front and very evident.. and what if anything do you use to combat this issue? to promote even a fine hair growth to make the scalp less noticeable?
I do not want to bleach my hair a lighter color to try to hide the thinning hair/noticeable scalp.. and I keep my hair short and try to arrange it to hide the thinning area up front.. I keep my protein intake HIGH to lessen hair loss post WLS, with some success.. this hair loss issue that bothers me started well before my surgery.. its just getting more noticeable.. having moved from up front near my forehead to reach almost to the crown of my head now.. in an upside down V shape.. the only area on my head that seems to be losing hair is this part up front where it started thinning well before surgery.. as I am post menopausal.

am open to any suggestions for any supplements, topical creams, dietary fixes etc that might encourage even peach fuzz hair growth in this thin hair scalp area..

Post-menopausal caught my eye...I'm sixty, but my initial hair loss occurred from being scalped by a horse when I was 26...sorry, freaky I know, but there you have it.  The whole top of my head went missing and was found in the spring, anyhoo, long story short; I had a skin graft and many scalp 'stretchings' for a few years and was left with an inch and a half part.  I wore scarves and combed my hair over it as you can't transplant hair onto hip skin [the graft].
I was worried about further loss after this surgery, but armed myself with scarves and attitude until milauren [Lorraine] from this site discovered a product named Toppik.  Check it out at fabove.ca.  You buy it in your colour and sprinkle it on and voila!  It sticks to your existing hairs and covers my original WIDE part as well...Wonderful!  It's expensive and you don't need a lot, so start with the small container....all the best...

Hello
I am not post menopausal....but I have very thin hair.  I have had thin hair since I was about 30.  I have been to a transplant dr.  Dr. Simmons.  He diagonosed me with unpatterned alopecia.  He quoted me $6000 for a transplant that might last 5 years.  I have thin hair on my crown and the sides.  I have also been to sure hair to get a "hair system"... they were not able to match a hair piece I felt looked natural.  I have curly hair they just couldn't seem to get the texture right.
I have tried rogaine for women from the states and nioxin shampoo.
I have just convinced my doctor to send me to a dermatologist.  My doctor said they would put needles in my head.  I am willing to try anything.

In the meantime I use a product like Toppik but I like the hair fibres from www.surehair.ca better.  It does take a few tries to get the right colour and it takes time to get used to using them.  If I don't use something you can see the entire top of my scalp.

All the best I hope you find someting that works for you.

Hey there. Like you I have the same issues I'm 56 and my hair thinned just when I became post .  A natural remedy was recommended to me called silicea that I just started taking and a vitamin B compound also that I have to pick up over the weekend. I know there are lots of natural remedies but it's finding one that will work for you.  I'll let you know if I see any differences.

THANKS for all the suggestions. I think I am gonna try TOPPIK.. but will wait to purchase it when I am on vacation in USA in the near future. I can order it from Amazon.com and have it delivered to the US address where I will be staying and the cost for the products is less than half the cost listed from Canadian sources. So.. will give it a try. I am retired, so no rush to have it asap.. as I don't have a daily workplace to go to, etc..where I am in public eye much. IF I were
out in public daily etc.. I would order it now from Cdn source to get a quick fix on this problem.

However, since I am mostly at home on a daily basis.. will wait a couple of months til I am in USA on vacation and purchase it then, and I believe Amazon.com will ship it to the US address for free! Too bad Amazon.com won't ship it to Canada LOL.. but  I would rather pay $9 US for a small container than $26.95 Cdn + shipping and tax for similar container here. The TOPPIK hair spray is cheaper in US also, as is the spray attachment for the TOPPIK fibres.. and if I order over $25 in merchandise I get FREE shipping to the US address! I have dealt with Amazon.com before for merchandise that was not available in Canada, or was extremely expensive in Canada compared to US sources.. and was 100% satisfied with the prompt service...never hurts to have a US address (relative's address) to use for shipping LOL.

Once I get it, and try it out, I will let you know how satisfied I am with the results. Again, I appreciate the help I got on this matter.
