I have a question for the surgery vets around here if you don`t mind!

I was wondering what you felt were the most important things you could change about your eating or eating behaviours prior to surgery?

I'm struggling with my diet right now and could really use some pointers/motivation.

Thanks in advance.

My #1 recommendation would be to make sure that you are eating a healthy breakfast, that includes at least 3 of the 4 food groups.  #2 if you normally drink with meals try to wean yourself off so that you don't miss it after surgery. #3 if you are a pop drinker switch to crystal light. #4 walk as much as you can.

If you can make some of these little changes pre-surgery it makes a huge difference post-surgery.

Good luck on your journey. Muriel

I started by eliminating all carbon-based drinks - no pop or even canned iced tea - and no straws.  I also switched to decaf tea (I don't do coffee).  Stopped eating chips & dip (the hardest change of all).  Drinking more water.

If you don't take vitamins now, start.  And get some exercise - even if it's walking 1/2 block and back.  If you're in an apt bldg, you can walk the halls.

Anything you can do now helps in the long run -- less to eliminate/change later.

Good luck!

Hi Melissa...great question...I know my Dr. said after my consultation to eat Lean Cusine...I've never bot one in my life and wasn't about too!!!  I think really it was for more portion control than content....anyway...I came home and was just careful and mindful of what I was putting in my mouth.  The closer my surgery date got, I started mentally to "detach" my self from food...I never had a "last meal" thot that would be dangerous for me, the 3 days prior to surgery were clear fluids for me...I also made the decision NOT to own/buy scales, again..didn't want to become scale obsessed, instead I have only been weighed at my Dr's office.    Remember...we are Eating to Live....not Living to Eat....  best advice ever...Patti K.

The number one thing I would suggest is to practice the "stop drinking 1/2 hour before a meal and one hour after. This has been the hardest thing to get used to for me. Keep in mind that each centre has their own time line for this, Ottawa is 1/2 hour before-one hour after

I would also suggest that you practice taking your vitamins as well.

In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.

My advice?  There are a few BIG things that you need to change post-surgery.  Pick the easiest one to try first.  When you have that down, add another.

1) no carbonated beverages
2) not drinking while eating (or 30min after)
3) protein FIRST before anything else at all meals.
4) 4-6 small, protein based meals/snacks a day
5) ditch the "white" carbs like bread, rice, pasta and potatoes.

For me I wish I had gotten used to eating three solid meals a day. Instead I used to skip breakfast and if I had time I would have lunch but man when I got home I don't think I ever stopped eating until I went to bed. Now if I eat a big breakfast and another 2 good meals I very rarely eat late at night. Also I wish I could have cut down on the carbs back then too. Best of luck with your diet. It does get easier the more consistent you get with your eating.
