I picked up my prescription for colace and it is gel caps.  Can I take them?  Should I break them open?  Or should I just go and buy liquid?

Hey Tracy welcome home
Since you said prescription Im assuming its one they discharged you with?  If its what your Dr Ordered then I would be going with it.  I know in Guelph its what they recommend and not Milk of Magnesa, although I did MOM before I knew Guelph had a prefrence.

Don't think you Doc would prescribe something you could not take!  Stick with the prescription.  Congratulation for you're arrival on the bench.  Wishing you a speedy recovery.

doctors do it all the time. My daughter once saw a dr in a walk in clinic, and despite telling her of an allergy to penicillin, ended up with a RX for penicillin, which was caught by the pharmacist.

Buyer beware. You have to be your own advocate.

Don't trust those walk in clinic Doctors either but I would think that a surgeon an expert in it's field who has followed a patient for the last year would know what to prescribe for a simple #2.

Yes, you'd think so. But surgeons tend to be "big picture" kind of guys, and the fact that colace comes in different formulations (liquid, gel caps, etc) may escape their mind. They might think (or not even think) "all i ever need is for this to come in liquid", so they don't write that on the script.

They, frankly, dont really care about your bowel movements (once you're out of hospital). That's an aftercare kind of thing, and all they really care about is cutting you open, fixing the inside, sewing you back up and getting you out of hosp. So, while they want you to be passing gas, its because that's an indication that the surgery is successful and there are no complications. Your ongoing bowel movements are your problem, not theirs.

That's not meant to be negative toward surgeons, at all. I'd rather they focused on doing the right thing while they've got their tools inside me, learning and keeping up with new techniques, etc, rather than keeping informed on what formulations colace comes in.

So, what i'm saying, 'buyer beware', is its up to us to realize that we need liquid formulations, and to advise the pharmacist about that.

This is quite the string of responses!
I need to comment upon you painting all surgeons with the same brush.
I had the same surgeon as Joanne, and on Tuesday when I saw him for a second post op visit, he specifically asked about my BM's, asked how the colace was doing and asked if I had any trouble swallowing them.
I strongly agree that buyer (or patient) needs to be aware, and to seek out guidance from their centre rather than rely only on this website, but all surgeons are not alike.
