Weight training & club membership
Okay - for the second time in my life I am now seriously considering club membership.
I had attempted this twice before, the first time I was thwarted by the "costumes" of skin-tight workout gear, and the "culture" of aggressive disco-type music and musclebound guys checking out the chicks.
The second time, I found that the accessibility was less useful - the opening hours weren't optimal. Also, the personal trainer talked down to me.
Wasted money.
So now I am told that I should increase my weight training, as my muscles require retraining.
I have lost a bunch of weight, but I'm all flabby and weak.
Does anybody have suggestions?
I'm looking at joining my local community centre - it would cost $51.50 for 1 month, $122.00 for 3 months, and $225 for 6 months.

I may have mentioned this before but a girl on another forum lost hundreds of pounds and used P90X and she is BUILT. I will be purchasing it as soon as I get OK from my PCP.

I have it Jen. It is NOT for people early out. It is really hardcore so I wouldn't suggest this to people that are within their first few months necessarily from surgery, but when you get to a point where your typical workout is not challenging enough - that's when PX90 is pretty good.
I bought it and kind of regret it because really do to the first video you need this pull up bar and that's YET another bloody purchase (expensive). I like the other videos I tried but have not done them all yet. I wish I'd bought the lady version of this which I think is called Turbofire. I don't feel like I relate to the videos at all. The thing I don't like about the PX90 promotion is that they pay for weight loss sites so I never quite know if the websites of Px9o people are legit - meaning did they actually lose it only from p90x or something else.

Hi Dawn - I was thinking you'd have to be quite stable from surgery before using it. Thanks for the information. I am going to look into turbofire. My son has some equipment in the basement - hopefully enough.

I find $51 expensive to be honest...but if there are specific benefits to you then it may be worth it to you -- whether it is geographically desirable or you have a variety of options. For $51 I would expect a lot - cardio machines, weight machines (wide variety and lots of machines) , a swimming pool, and access to classes. For $51 you should be able to get a top quality membership.
Again though it is whatever works for you!! The hours and geographic location in itself can make it worth it to you.

Hmmm - thanks Dawn.
Yes, there is access to a pool and to classes.
Haven't seen the weight room yet so I don't know what kinds of machines are there.
It is located about 7 blocks away if I were walk on the sidewalk - but cutting through the park it would take me about 10-12 minutes.
Dangerous park, though - so not after dark.
Lots to think about.
Maybe I shoudl buy some free weight and start a programme at home?

As long as there is variety. I wouldn't pay a membership for only say, treadmills. If you are paying that much a month, I'd want a full package. Sounds like you have good choices available to you :) You'll get bored easily. If it is close by (at least for me) I'm far more likely to do it.
I made sure not to give myself an excuse and I bought a treadmill. I'm good at making not excuses to do things so at 6 months out I bought a treadmill. I made a rule that I could only watch one of my favourite shows every day if I did one hour (4 miles) on my treadmill. :) LOL
It's a matter of what works for you :)

It will be worthwhile if you use it. For 6 months that is $37.50 a month, I think that would be worth it. I have some weights and equipment at home but I've got a full sized basement to put it in and right now it is a big mess so have to clean it up before I can use anything. If they have a wide variety of machines, weights, classes etc it would be good. Make sure there is no extra charge for the classes, I've been to gyms that had classes but it cost extra. Find out if you can go for a couple of free days and go at the time when you would normally go. If you are always going to go at 7pm and it is jammed you might think twice.
