Calcium Citrate at Costco again

I stopped by yesterday (Ancaster location) to check and yes, they have it again. It's a 250 count bottle, each tablet being 600g. Since you need 1200g/day, this bottle will last about 4 1/2 months! I don't remember the cost, just that it was a good deal.

Also got some Digestive Enzymes (with papaya). I had to take one last night and it worked wonderfully. Thanks for the suggestion, Myke.

ETA: The brand at Costco is their Kirkland brand. Big white bottle.

Hi,
Are these tablets chewable?

Costco also carries a liquid calcium that I find really good.  2 tablespoons gives you your daily limit - the brand is Wellese and is orangey in flavour.  It is sweet but take some water with it and you will not have any aftertaste or burping.  I can't take the honking big calcium pills so this works great for me.

At my recent 3 month check-up, I told the nurse I was taking 1500g of calcium citrate, (since that's what I was told to take at my 6 week visit) in 2 sets of 750g.  She said that the body cannot absord more than 600g at a time, so there is no sense in taking more than that.  I hope you're not taking your 2 tbsp. at once, otherwise you're wasting it.

Not chewable.  Big pills that I split.

I got liquid calcium citrate with vit D in the US.  They also had it with magnesium, should i be getting that in the future?  And why are the only chewable multivitamins at SDM for over 50 or kids? What do you use?  And I heard someone say there center has them taking prenatal vitamins for the iron, is this necessary?

Julie

Sorry, all of a sudden I had a lot of vit questions, lol

SDM has a regular chewable in their brand (Life, Spectrum).  They kind of blend in, I always have to look around to find them.  Ask at the pharmacy.  They have 18mg of iron, so they were recommended at HRRH.

You cannot take calcium carbonate, but I don't know about cal-mag, only Calcium Citrate.  This is what we were told at orientation.

As for vitamins, I use pre-natals, since they have more iron in them.  Yes, it is necessary to take extra iron going forward, as you don't get enough from your food anymore.  Zinc, too, if you find your hair is falling out (this is from the nurse at my recent visit).  And taking pre-natals is better than paying for 2 sets of tablets (vits and iron).

I don't use chewables, so I can't help you there.  I split my cal-cit and vits and either crush them into my yogurt (cal-cit), or just swallow with water.  Takes a bit of practice, but you can do it.

You cannot take calcium with any other type of medicine or vitamin except for Vit D.  Otherwise, the calcium 'fights for dominance' with the other meds and you don't absorb enough of anything.  Only Vit D doesn't do this with it.  Also, only take 600g of Calcium at at time, as that is all your body can absorb at a time.  No use taking 1200g since you're just wasting 600g every time.

As long as the Cal in the Cal-mag is calcium citrate then it is ok.

I can't remember if the magesium makes it easier for your body to absorb the calcium into your bloodstream or use it went it is in there. Either way it is advisable to take them together.
