Is This RNY Friendly?

I made a Butternut Squash and Pear Soup for my family tonight and it was absolutely delicious. Is this soup friendly post RNY like during the puree stage or are the pears likely to do me in?
Here's the recipe....
Here's the recipe....
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 2 medium onions, diced
- 1 medium butternut squash peeled, seeded and cut into 1-inch pieces
- 4 pears, peeled and chopped into roughly 1-inch pieces
- 1-quart low sodium chicken stock, or enough to cover
- 1 sprig rosemary
- Heavy cream (we just used a bit of milk)
- Ground black pepper
I guess it depends on what you consider RNY-friendly. The recipe you cited has about 180 carbs in it (give or take depending on whether you use heavy cream or milk - heavy cream actually has fewer carbs). So it depends on how many servings you can get out of it and whether you're planning to try to maintain your ketosis post-op for a while. If you can make it into 20 tiny little meals and eat it only once a day and avoid other carbs for the day than the carbs don't seem outrageous. What strikes me though, is that this isn't a 'protein first' sort of food, there is almost no protein in it at all. I guess you could experiment with the Unjury Chicken Stock protein or add unflavoured protein to it...

Answered my own question, found a recipe calculator. When I put in the this recipe, guess of course at some of the ingredients and measures it comes up at 34grams of carbs for 6 servings (this is without adding in any cream or milk). Protein is just 2.7 grams, fat is 8.6 grams and calories are 204. So I guess it depends on what you mean by RNY friendly. The protein is too low I think.

I think that it's probably a healthy small side dish (and it sounds good!). Protein first and a couple of spoonfuls of soup instead of a veggie would probably be good occasionally. I really try not to eliminate things from my diet that are healthy and tasty like this, I just keep them in small quanitities so that I don't miss out on it. What part of counting carbs are you confused with, maybe we can help?
