I had my last appointment yesterday in the assessment process yesterday with Katie the Nutritionist at TWH ( LOVE HER).  When I was done I asked her how they decided who gets accepted or rejected and she said I didn't need to worry that based on my file and the criteria she was sure I'd get accepted and had nothing to worry about.  I might be having surgery in DECEMBER!!!

I walked out of the hospital and was kind of stunned thinking OH CRAP..i'm having surgery and soon!!!  Eek.....so exciting and nerve wrecking.

I guess I need to put my Santa Claus boots on early this year and get my shopping done just in case!

I'm in similar situation but I think my surgery won't be until January.  But I'm fighting the urge to call TWH and confirm that my file is going ahead to next stage of meeting surgeon.  When do you think they will call us?

Sandy I missed their meeting because my appointment was at 230 so I think you will hear back first where as I need to wait until next Thursday to go before the team.  If I were you I would call and request to stay at TWH!  The wait at St. Mike's is longer!

I'm trying to decide if I want to do that.  St. Mike's is 5 minutes from my house, so I kind of like the idea of being so close if complications come up.  I'm also leaning towards the VSG since I take NSAIDs due to my arthritis and I think I may have more of a chance of getting one at St. Mike's (although its just my impression, I may be wrong).  So not sure what to do.  But yes, I'm calling in a minute and checking in with TWH....let you know what I hear if I can get through.

Hi Sandy......Just wondering if you've had any advice yet re the VSG vs RYN?
I have severe osteo-arth and have been on 200mg Celebrex daily for past
10+ years.  Whenever I've had to stop the Celebrex (for minor surgeries, etc)
I get really crippled up within 2-3 days.  I dread the thought of not EVER being
able to take them again!  I didn't realize at the onset of this process that this
would be an issue and now am quite worried.  I don't know much at all
about the VSG.....guess I had better research it.  Will look forward to hearing
back from you and other members.  Many Thanks.

As far as I understand, RNY makes  NSAIDS a no go forever, while VSG allows you to keep taking them.  I haven't discussed this with bariatric assessment team, although I have talked about my arthritis with them.  Its up to the surgeon to approve you for a VSG, so I'm saving the discussion for when I meet with him. Of course, he is bound by the OHIP funding guidelines to some extent, but I think there is always a measure of professional discretion and leeway. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If I can't get a VSG, I will need to pause and really think about whether I will choose an RNY.
The RNY weight loss may offer enough pain relief from the OA that I don't miss the NSAIDS, but there is no guarantee about that.

Thanks for your reply Sandy.  Guess I too will wait for discussion w/surgeon and, in
meantime, educate myself re VSG procedure and success rate.  I have noticed that
a lot of folks posting on this forum initially had a VSG and then later had the RNY.....
and am wondering why the VSG was unsuccessful?  Will let you know if I come up
with any interesting info.....Verity
