surgery times
I've been figuring out things and trying to get organized for the day of my surgery as it's fast approaching. Have to have someone to be here with my son in the morning when hubby and I leave and to drop him off and pick him up from school etc..
My surgery time is at 8:00 am. When they told me, a part of me wanted to see if there was anything available later since I'm a 2 hr drive away but I didn't want to seem ungrateful so I just shut my mouth and thought ok it's doable.. but I just read my paper and heck they want me there at 7am.. that means I'm going to have to get up here at 4 in the morning
I best be going to bed the same time my son does LOL ya like that's gonna happen I'm gonna have to get his lunch ready, a crock pot supper ready and in the fridge for his caretaker to just be able to get it out and plug it in.
hmm I guess his caretaker will be spending the night as well as we can't expect someone to come out here at that hour.
I'm kind of wishing I had of mentioned at the very start of the process that a later surgery time would be better. Or maybe we don't even have a choice.. did anyone here ever request a certain time for theirs?

I know it's really inconvenient but later surgeries have a higher risk of being cancelled. If the surgery before you runs too long they would cancel you and rebook. That's much more inconvenient than having to get up a couple of hours earlier. Mine was at 8am too so I stayed in a hotel the night before so I had to be up at 5am to be at the hospital by 6am. You'll be fine! Try not to worry too much. :)

a few things...
when you make dinner in the crock pot and put it in the fridge be very careful.... I would NOT place the crock part in the fridge and then pop it into the warming unit when its cold... it may crack...what I do is the night before i place all my stuff in plastic bowl all mixed and place that in the fridge... the morning of a plop it all in the crock pot and turn it on... since you will be leaving so early i would place the stuff in a plastic bowl the night before and place it in the fridge..... the morning of dump it all in the crock pot but dont turn it on... get the caretaker to turn it on about 7ish... depending on how old your son is maybe this can be a special job he can do to help mommy and you can call him when you arrive at the hospital to remind him....
why not come and stay the night in Guelph..... this time of year the highways are a mess...I dont know where you are coming from but the stretch of highway 401 between Guelph line and HWY 24/Hespler Rd has taken 3 lives in the last 2 weeks... that time of the morning the 401 is a zoo...you can always leave after son goes to bed... and if the caretaker will be there overnight anyway and if your son is not expecting you to be there when he wakes... it may be do-able
I agree about keeping the early time... I have had unrelated surgeries cancelled 3X because they were booked later in the day and an emergency came up and bumped my OR ... or the ultrasound went down in my OR

My paper said 8 am surgery time and to be there an hour early.. making it 7. I figured I'll sleep all day too LOL I'm almost certain I'm not going to get much sleep no matter where I'm at anyway.
Will take your advice on watching the weather and if it's due to be nasty we might just go the night before to avoid extra stress and risk.
oh and thanks for the suggestion about the crock pot.. I've done it once before but I think I may have let it sit out a bit before turning it on. Your idea is a good one. Found out tonight that my mom will be able to stay with our son Eli so that's comforting. I think I'll sleep with him that night as I'm having some anxiety about the what ifs that can happen with any surgery.

my surgery was march 2nd. I had to be there by 10 for a noon surgery. On the way there, it was the worst snow storm of the century ( i exaggerate, slightly). 15 car pile up ahead of us (not exaggerating). I was nearly late, kept calling HRRH to update them on my progress.
I'd advise staying closer to the hospital, if you can manage that at all. I was so anxious that i'd be too late and they'd cancel me.
Awww..about sleeping with your son the night before. Try not to focus on the what ifs, focus on the positive outcomes!!!
Hugs.

well found out at my pats that they actually want me there at 6 am not 7 am. So hubby and I have decided to go the day before and get a room and spend a nice afternoon/evening together before my 'big life changing surgery"
Found out the hospital has a code we can use with the hotel too that gives us an out of town patient discount rate. So that's cool.
