The taste of iron

I'm not sure about the Proferrin, but the FeraMAX polysaccharide iron are in caplets you can open and can mix with water or something else to easily take immediately post-op. This is what I'll be doing.

When do you plan on switching to the Proferrin Trish?

Can the FeraMax be found anywhere?

FeraMAX can be gotten at any pharmacy. I'll do both, with FeraMAX as my base and Proferrin as the extra as needed. I spoke with OKNEE here on our board who is a nurse specializing in iron issues about it. FeraMAX is a good option for me as I'll still have a part of my duodenum in my food stream. For RNYers, the Proferrin is still the best once you can start swallowing the pills.

Do you think the BA chewable iron is acceptable for starting out?

It's carbonyl iron which is more readily absorbable than any iron salt, but not as good as the Proferrin. I would think it would be better than not taking anything until you can start swallowing the Proferrin, but you'll need to take a larger dose than you would take of the Proferrin.

Good thinking!! I'm extremely low on my iron right now and it really sucks. Will probably start infusions I'm the new year. It sucks.

I already said this in  your other thread Dawn but gosh that must suck for you.

I am hearing this from more and more people here and in the support group at the hospital.  I am really trying to take a pro-active approach as best I can.  I live a very busy life and I just dont' know if I could handle the exhaustion of anemia!

It really does suck, you're right.  I've been 3 times for blood transfusions due to low hemoglobin related to iron.

Of course, I am wonderwoman once it's done - for about 2 weeks. LOL

I hear you, Dawn.  And trust me, I would SO much rather not have blood transfusions.  Setting up an appt with my hemotologist asap to get iron infusions instead.

As an aside, what have you heard re. the efficacy of iron shots in the meantime?  I'm willing to try anything at this point.
