Optifast Crisis

I'm having a bit of an Optifast Crisis.  It has me a little bummed because I was so psyched to rock the Optifast stage. There is just something in the Optifast that is not agreeing with me.  The first day only the Vanilla was making me dry heave for a couple of hours but the chocolate was manageable.  The second day I actually threw up the Vanilla 20 minutes after I got it down and then the Chocolate started making me dry heave. I only had 2 shakes yesterday and some broth and jello which all totalled like 600 calories.  This morning I had a Chocolate shake and 30 minutes later up it came from my stomach.  I have tried to doctor these shakes up....but it doesn't matter my stomach just keeps on rejecting it.

I emailed my dietician Katie at TWH yesterday for some help but I got an auto-reply message saying she was on vacation until January 4th.  Should I email Lorraine for help?

I refuse to cheat on Optifast so I am just not getting calories in.  Today is day 3 and I don't feel terrible anymore - just a slight headache and a little tired.  I went on my mom's scale this morning and I've lost 11 pounds in 3 days.

I really need some help.

I'd definitely contact someone else and hope they are still in today.  I know many offices are shutting down at noon today so I'd be phoning ASAP.

I would call immediately, and keep calling until you get someone.  Tell the receptionist what's going on and that you need to speak with someone who can give you direction right away.  I wouldn't want you to have to deal with this over the weekend.

Good for you for hanging in.  I hope your clinic can suggest a good alternative for you.

As others have said I would call right away. I am not sure which clinic you are with but I know Ottawa is open today as I just got back from there.

Good luck, I hope it gets better for you.

You might be allergic to an ingredient in the shake.  I agree with everyone else - try and get hold of someone at the clinic.

Hi Melissa

Yes, do try to call .

Something you might try is REALLY watering them down (I always used 3 cups of liquid to 1 pouch), and drinking them much more slowly.  Mix only 1/3 of a pouch at a time with a blender or bullet because if you do spread it out (1/3 pouch) over 1 hour it won't start to separate.  And flavour it - mint extract, decaf coffee, sugar-free flavourings, whatever is appealing.  This might work.  It is also good preparation for the "sip /sip / sip" once you are post-surgery.

Congrats on the amazing weight drop :)  Good things are obviously coming, that's for sure!

Claire,

I start having the biggest problem with the drinks when they start to separate!  I get about 1/2 way through and then something shifts, the flavour changes, and my stomach starts rejecting it.  I think I'm going to try it your way and see if that helps for my next shake.

Sorry to hear you're having a rough time. Mary is also a dietian at TWH maybe she can help you.

Hope you can get some help so opti can work. All the best

Heidi

Sometimes you just put one foot in front of the other, even if you don't know where you're going.
