Lived experience is very important in understanding life post wls, but relying on first person accounts alone often only gives us a micro picture of things. Aggregate data from multiple lived experiences helps round out the picture (usually in the form of scientific studies). So both are valid sources of information.
I think the preparation period is so long and so many people do such extensive research and read multiple message boards that many people feel like experts by the time they get their surgery. (But, of course, feeling like an expert is different than actually being an expert)
Personality may also play a role...some people are just more prone to the role of expert and like to be helpful and provide information.
I guess being cautious and evaluating the source of the information is always important.
But I also get your point, Karen.
