If you make you're own protein shakes, you can control the thickness and sweetness. You may want to try an unflavoured protein powder as your base and then add in your own flavours to control your sweetness.
Most flavour additives add weight to the shake. Milk, pudding or jello mixes, ice, etc. All lead to a thicker shake. Try making a shake with water, try flavouring with syrups or extracts or use flavoured water like crystal light, try it without ice. Also, blending it in the blender makes the shake thicker as well. Using a blender bottle, like the kind from gnc, would allow you to swirl the bottle around, so more like intense stirring, rather than shaking and adding in extra volume. The bonus of these is you can drink right out of the top and don't have to smell it.
Hope this helps. You could also look into other sources of protein like some of the other posters mentioned. As well protein bars can be helpful. It takes time to find your shake that works for you. It took me four months to find a shake I enjoy but now Iook forward to my morning shake.
All the best!

Hi April,
I bought the unflavoured Unjury protein powder (purchaseable from the pharmacy at the Civic Hospital - they even have sample packs to try). I would measure out a scoop of it into a container. Then I would add some of it to the soup I was drinking (130F or less temperature) or pudding or greek yogurt. It made it all the more palatable.
I also bought the Premier Protein drinks from Cost****hocolate flavour). Made some decaf and when it was at the appropriate temperature, added half of the drink and mixed it. Just like a Cafe Mocha...minus the whipped cream.
Good luck in working this out. Please remember that this isn`t forever, you will be adding other foods with more protein within a few more weeks.

I have to admit that I haven't had a moment of nausea since surgery unless confronted with a protein shake. I stopped drinking them for a while and when I tried to have one again it almost came back up. I just can't stand them. The only one that doesn't taste like protein is the Premier shakes at Costco (which are on sale right now). They only come in chocolate here. I'm planning on doing a run to the states to get some vanilla and strawberry. Good luck April.

I got some liquid childrens gravol and it helped me so much. On the ride home from the hospital I got so nauseated that I had to have something, so we stopped on the way home and got some. It worked amazingly well.
I'm not crazy about my protein shakes either. All I have right now is the vanilla but tonight I am adding some fruit pureed up to it. Hope this makes it taste better.
I just had my surgery too so maybe it's because we are so new at this.
Lots of ideas here, just keep trying.
