vitamin levels down

Well, the clinic called with my results from my 3 month bloodwork and they have some concerns.  They said that my iron, vitamin C and vitamin D are down significantly from the last bloodwork, and all below the acceptable range.

They told me to take 2 iron pills a day (said ferrous sulphate, but I questioned that and she agreed that Proferrin would be acceptable too) for a total of 22mg in addition to the 18mg that is in my multivitamin.

She also said to up my Vitamin D to 3000IU per day.

Also, to start taking Vitamin C at 2000mg per day.

She also mentioned that my urates (sp?) were quite high, but that isn't unusual after this surgery and they will continue to monitor them.  Not even sure what this means, so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Just when I had a handle on what to take and when...throws my whole schedule off!!LOL

I am so glad they monitor our levels because my thyroid was acting up with my last blood tests. I am lowering the dosage of my synthroid as of today and hopefully i will sleep now. I never knew that losing weight would affect my medication i take so much. I suffer with Progressive MS so alot of my medications were changed before surgery and even more now and i had surgery on Nov. 1/11. I guess if i am needing less meds than I am getting better or at least my size does not need so many. I am happy you have upped your vitamins that you need.

Urates are urine salts. If the levels are very high this is referred to as hyperuricemia and can be a precursor to gout and puts you at a higher risk of kidney stones. Have you ever had gout? If your numbers get very high, it can be treated with medications.

High levels can be caused by diet (certain types of protein, and fructose) and/or hereditary factors as well as rapid weight loss itself. If she wasn't concerned about your numbers, then they will probably just keep an eye on them and see if they settles down when your weight loss slows.

When looking for vitamin D, you may want to look for a dry form of D3 rather than the drops, as it is thought that the drops (which are oil based) are not well absorbed in RNYers (at least temporarily, due to some fat malabsorption). You may be able to find a pill with 5000 IU, so you don't have to take multiple pills.

Thanks for the explanation.  Never had gout, but several men in my family have it, so I will definitely keep an eye on this.

I actually take chewable Vitamin D (D3) in 1000IU, so three a day won't be bad.  I actually hate swallowing pills, no matter how small, so chewable is better for me.

The chewables should work fine then. If you end up needing a higher dose though and don't want so many chewables, Celebrate makes a quick dissolve tablet in 5000IU. Good luck!

Hi Tracy

I'm VERY sympathetic about the scheduling issue, which became a big problem for me when my results went south at 3 months too.  I finally got mself a medical alarm watch for Christmas, which I have programmed with the 7 (yes seven) different supplement "batches" I have to take.  It has made a tremendous difference as a prompt, and I now am 99.9% adhering to what I need to do, whereas before the 1st thing in the morning and last at night worked, but the inbetween wa**** and miss.

The watch is by Cadex Medical, and can be googled and bought on-line, or through Shoppers Home Health.

Good luck, and try not to let this get away from you as I did!

As I statedi n another post Vitamin D levels for many bariatric patients in Canada drop significantly in the winter months...Vitamin C..well that is easily rectified.

I just had my labs done last week and  as usual my iron is low...it's been low for 3 years and only a couple of times has it been NEAR the acceptable range...anyway..

I now take Bio-D-Emulsion in liquid form and add it to my daily drinks...it's really easy and doesn't have a flavour, also one less pill to injest

my iron as stated has always been low, that being said since I switched to teh following type of iron supplement it has been "better"...this type of iron was recommended to me by the chemist who works with bariatric patients here locally

I sometimes have found that pharmasicts, GP's and NUTS, don;t really understand how the body utilizes iron etc., becaus ethat is NOT their specialty, therefore I feel fortunate that my pharmacy has a chemist.

and the above iron are tiny capsules, so no after taste and they are EASY to swallow.

good luck on increasing those values~!

prior to surgery 323lbs....4 years post-op maintaining between 108- 114 lb loss.

life is AMAZING when you continue on the right path~!.  Use your surgeons gift to the fullest~!

This is very helpful, Mary;  I live next door to Nutrichem (Richmond Road/Ottawa), and hadn't even thought of them as such a valuble source of information.

Thanks!
