That must have been so startling, PJB!  It would be so strange to go in for one thing and wake up with something else.  Do they tell you ahead of time that that could be a possibility?

I think it's probably a blessing, however, that they went ahead with the VSG instead of, heaven forbid, waiting until a later time to do another procedure instead!  That way you didn't waste all that time on Optifast and psyching yourself up just to wake up to find you have to go through everything again.

Being so early in the process, I don't have much emotionally invested in what procedure I get.  Probably after the info session I'll have a better idea.  Although I get migraines and Advil gel caps are a wonder drug to me, so I won't be terribly upset if I end up with a VSG, I also understand why people really like the RNY too.  I'm undecided and will probably go with what the doctors tell me is the best for me, unless I develop a huge attachment to one over the other as the process goes on.

Thanks for sharing this - I'm learning so much just hearing about everyone's experience, including yours, PJB.

Hiya Melissa,  I can feel your disappointment .  It sounds like none of this could have been predicted.  This was probably as startling to the doc as it was to you, to hear how your plumbing was set up.  I hope you do not allow this to be a barrier to the great success that can be yours.

Hi Melissa, I had fight hard to get VSG. In Europe this is surgery number 1. I'm a very slow loser, but I hope to get where I want to be. I wish you best of luck.

Hi Melissa - please remember that WLS is a tool....
Once your heart heals from the disappointment of not having RNY you will become educated on VSG and begin your successful weight loss journey.
We are all here to support you......

And who knows..... perhaps you might even make it into medical books for your "cogenitial non-rotational intestines" when doctors now talk about RNY surgery and you could become famous and get millions and millions of dollars..... ok maybe not famous and maybe not millions but it sounded good  while I was typing it......

I have reached my goal weight ..... and LOVE my RNY !!!!!!!!!
