Poop! Help!
I have had problems since surgery and I used to be a once a day person. Clinic suggested I add benefibre to my protein drinks - no flavour and no thickening and take 1-2 stool softeners a day. I am taking two and get 1-2 spoonfulls of benefibre per day and am starting to see results. Water helps too. I am almost back to once a day give or take a couple two days.
Take the stool softners and you should see results in two days or so. Heavier duty laxatives are too harsh and the syrup is a no no because of the amount of sugar. My clinic said no to both. If you don't see results in 2-3 days with the softners and fibre call your clinic.

Ducosate sodium (2) every day, don't go more than 3 days without more drastic measures (eg, if you have a bm on Mon but still haven't had another one by Thurs, do something). I take more than the prescribed amount of MOM or use a glycerin suppository. Have you tried the cherry flavoured MOM? It's certainly not tasty, but I find it easier to get down than the regular one. And LOTS of caffeine-free liquids. Although caffeine can act as a laxative, it also dehydrates you somewhat.
The nurse told me that extended periods without bm's can contribute to all kinds of serious health problems, so try to stay on top of it. Good luck!

Stool softeners are the way to to go. Absolutely.
Ducosate sodium or Ducodate calcium work equally well.
Ask your pharmacist.
Stay on it - take the softener every day.
And drink drink drink, and walk walk walk.
I swear to god, if I hadn't started using herbal Senna tea as well, I would have ripped myself a new one. I think the diameter of the stuff I eventualy passed was the same size as a baby's head.
it will pass eventually, but I had a good three months of agony until I had worked out a routine for me,

I had constipation after my surgery (after a lifetime of having loose bowels) and MOM got things going. Then everything was great and for the first time since being a kid I had a daily BM that was normal. It was great! Then I had my gallbladder removed a week and a half ago. Now I'm back to worrying if I will get back to normal. I go between constipated and loose BM's. I've started using Senna tablets if it's been a couple of days. The problem is letting it go more than a few days and then you are in trouble.
Before my GB surgery when 'things' were good, I was drinking Benefibre On-the-go sticks. The Strawberry lemonade tastes great and I will put the unflavoured into my Crystal light or SF Kool Aid. Only 2 a day keeps things moving for me.
Good luck!
