HOW SHOULD I DEAL WITH COMMENTS ABOUT WEIGHT?
I am down 103 lbs and must admit that I do look and feel like a different person. A couple of people have said I have lost enough weight. The thing is I need to lose another 10 lbs to even make it out of the obese BMI category. My personal desire would be to weigh 160 lbs. That is 30 lbs away and would still be in the overweight category but I think I would feel very good at that weight.
Has anyone thought of a tactful way to tell people to mind their own business? I don't want to be abrasive but I do not welcome such comments.

Maybe you could say something like, "Don't worry, my weight loss is being medically supervised. My goal is to arrive at a weight that is healthy for me." You could even add something like, " I know for some people it is strange seeing me after losing so much and it can give the impression of having lost too much but don't worry, I am being very careful." Hopefully that will shut them up! Never sure if a person is being thoughtful (worried about you losing too much) or jealous (they may have a slight weight problem themselves and your weight loss is shifting the balance of power...you are no longer the fattest person in the room).
Hope that makes sense. I am not looking forward to fielding those questions. I have not made a secret about my upcoming surgery but neither do I think every acquaintance in my circle needs all the details, especially people at work.
Andrea.

Andrea, I love your responses - tactful and reassuring to someone who might actually be worried, and MYOB in a nice way to those you're not sure about.
Had RNY surgery July 22/11, St. Joe's Hamilton, with the awesome Dr. Scott Gmora. Had abdominoplasty August 2/13, Scarborough, with equally awesome Dr. Michael Kreidstein.
First - you keep to your goals....lose it now while you are in the first year post wls.....people are not used to you looking thin but I would ignore them
Second - we have a tendency to look haggard the first year to 18 months with such rapid weight loss...our faces take a bit of a beating....but eventually things fill out a bit and we look healthy again...people can be reacting to this
Third - I would just say thanks for your input - or totaly ignore them....or just say Maybe to shut them up.....I dont think you need to go into your medical history with them - its not their business ( unless immediate family....then maybe a yes your are right I am thin...and then ignore them)
Good luck with your goals -
Barb

I too have had a number of comments from people. Some may be geniunely concerned that perhaps you have a serious illness, others just dont think before they speak!!
I usually say that my weight loss is healthy and I am working with a dietician. Sometimes I may add that I understand that such significent weight loss can seem drastic but try being me! ... Hello??... who knows what will fit from my closet every morning! LOL
Funny, when I first returned to work (where the details of what surgery I had were kept private) I actually fibbed somewhat about how much weight I had lost. I returned to work after five weeks and seemed impossible to otherwise explain losing over 50 lbs. Very few co-workers noticed the 20 lbs I lost on optifast but they ALL noticed my weight loss when I came back to work.

I once lost a bunch of weight about 15 years ago, and wound up around 160-170. (The lowest I've ever been as an adult, and it didn't last more than a month or two.) I thought it might be nice to lose more than that, but I was comfortable at that weight too. I was pretty thrilled with myself.
The comment that used to most bother me was, "Good for you, keep going, you're almost there!" I'm almost where? I'm happy where I am! Or, "You're looking great! Another couple of months and you're going to be a knock-out!" I think I look pretty darn good now!
People think they're being encouraging - I get that. But what they really need to do is stick to the compliment and then shut up so they don't wreck it.
I don't remember what I said in response to those comments. I guess I'm going to have to figure it out! I know what I WANTED to say, but you are looking for tactful responses. ;)
