Things I learned at my GP's office....
VSG on 01/25/12
My GP is awesome and she wanted me to have a post-op follow-up with her. I feel so lucky to have a compassionate doctor who actually cares about her patients. It took me forever to find her. When she first called me into her office she said she has been thinking about me ever since the O.R. Synopsis crossed her hands and we spent about 20 minutes talking about my experiences with learning about the congenital intestinal problem and waking up to the VSG and also about my post-op experiences so far.
I find it interesting how little they give you in regards to information that happened to you on your discharge report. She went over it with me and it was so interesting to find out that they spent a really long long time taking a look at my intestines, and that Dr. Penner actually had Dr. Okrainec (head paged into the operating room to take a look also. It was after much discussion and deliberating that they collectively decided that the VSG was the safest route for me. It was calming for me to know and learn (even though I am starting to come to an understanding of how I can make the VSG work for me) that the doctors were patient and thoughtful in deciding what would be the best route for me. It has just provided me a calm reassurance that the RNY would have in fact been quite a risk for me.
The other thing I learned is that the blood work my doctor ordered the day before surgery showed that I was low in ferritin and vitamin D....kind of sucks to hear that I'm working from a deficit already but it is what it is! Time to get supplementing and take care of business!

I'm impressed with your physician and really glad she took the time to go over the OR note with you. I can only imagine the adjustment you had to go thru to find the VSG instead of RNY. I'm sure the time she took to review the OR note with you has helped with the mental shift. It shows you how just a few minutes of time and caring can make such a difference.
Good luck on this journey.
Andrea.
