questions...about arthritis discomfort

Well hello there, I have not been around here much in the past few months.  I have finally hit Onederland, present weight 196 pounds, (starting weight 295 pounds before I approached my family doc about bariatric surgery), have just achieved my one year post op date (March 2nd) and life has been going well until now.
I have just recently started experiencing arthritic pain in my feet, both feet at the joint where the great toe attaches to the ball of the foot. No redness, no swelling, no pain to surface touch like you get with gout, but pain in the ball of my foot at the base of the great toe, when I stand and walk on my feet. The right foot more than the left, and some days its worse than others. I have used my tramacet that I take for my severely degenerated discs and sciatica, for the foot pain but it only masks the pain to a degree, it does not relieve the inflammation in the joints like NSAIDs would. I know I cannot use NSAIDs, and am wondering what I can do to relieve the pain in my feet. I used to take turmeric and bromelain capsules before surgery for arthritis relief with great results, but I tried turmeric and bromelaine capsules about 6 months postop and my pouch felt like I had been kicked in the gut! After just two days of this herbal combo (one capsule daily with food) the pouch discomfort started up, so I had to stop the turmeric and bromelain.
I am wondering, what do fellow RNY patients who are many months post surgery do to relieve arthritis pain in their joints, especially the feet? I have to keep active as I am sluggish at losing weight, its a real battle, being older (59) I don't lose as quick as the young'uns and I find the best exercise for me has been walking. I walk 4 to 6 miles per day nearly every day of the week, rain or shine! Have not had any foot pain until a few days ago, and I switch between 3 pair of walking shoes so they don't get worn out. This arthritis in my feet is putting a damper on my exercise habits. I also use elliptical machine but hate it, and use recumbent bike but don't particularly enjoy it either as I find sitting with my sciatica and my suddenly noticeable tailbone, is painful. (Lost a lot of weight off my "caboose" and now my tailbone screams at me if I sit for any length of time, even with a gelpad on the seat of the chair!).
Would appreciate any suggestions you folks can give for something effective in relieving arthritis in my feet.

I am not sure but I know I asked the NP during my preop visits about NSAID suppositories.  She was not sure and said she would talk to the team about it.  I would suggest you see if you can talk to the surgeon or the NP from your team and ask if about the suppositories

I asked the family doctor about NSAID Suppositories and he said NO.. could not take them because the medication absorbs into the blood stream and could still possibly cause ulcers in the pouch, from the medication being in the blood supply to the pouch.
Would be nice if I could use them.. but am not very hopeful.
thanks for replying.

Re - tailbone, excellent posture helps with that. When you're sitting correctly, your weight goes on your "sit bones" (ilia) and not the tailbone. That helps.

Feet pain - have you tried orthotics? i used to have incredible foot pain, till i started using orthotics.

I've just messaged a friend on facebook, she was mentioning a natural homeopathic pain relief, i'll get back to you when she replies.

hope you find a solution.

I use Diclofenac suppositories ( Diclofenac is the generic, aka as brand name Voltaren) 50 mg once a day ( "those NSAID suppositories" you were told you could not use by your medical team)

With the blessing of my surgeon, I can use for short periods ( have used daily for up to a month when on a very active holiday and had 2 torn meniscus afterwards, and for OA relief in hips and feet) as long as I take PANTOLOC orally (Proton pump inhibitor to reduce acid and protect pouch) and as long as I have been taking both together when things are really bad, I have relief and can sleep, or have an active day....the effect of the suppository lasts about 12 hours for me, and I ahve had no side effects (intestinal bleeding or ulcers)  despite the NSAID going systemic in my blood ...

My surgeon is more lenient than others, he also allows Celebrex after his patients are 2 years out...

About time pharmacological companies invented some non-addictive painkillers for our segment of the population. There are more and more people having some form of WLS and we are getting old and arthritic like everybody else.We are entitled to live as painfree as possible and can no longer pop an Advil when hurting and Tylenol doesn't help much..

I'll tell you what my friend said, who's totally into homeopathic medicine. ANything you decide, tho, you should put past your treating doc.

she says that Wheat and dairy, apparently, can cause joint pain, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. SOmetimes cutting that out entirely helps with pain.

She's read a lot of info by Dr. Stanley Jacobs, MD "The Miracle of MSM" http://msm-info.com/

she also suggested chondroitin (sp?) and glucosamine, but the MSM is easier, she says.
She started with 2000mg twice a day, and moved up to 3000mg a day.

She is not a medical professional, but very active in contact sports, and has a bunch of pain that she deals with.
