HOW I LOST ONE POUND - THE MUSICAL
It sure sounds like Lesley Carlberg has a can’t-miss comedy hit on her hands.
After all, you really can’t go wrong with a show about the trials and tribulations — but mostly frustrations — of losing weight. Especially when they’re filtered through a comedian’s wry eyes and abetted by eight talented actors.
Throw in some original tunes, and what you get is How I Lost One Pound: The Musical, coming to the Toronto Fringe Festival in July.
However, before then, Clarkson writer Carlberg is bringing her show to the Lorne Park Library for a free preview on June 6 at 7 p.m.
This is Toybox Productions’ fourth original musical written for the Fringe, which started in 1989 to showcase uncensored plays by new artists. Today, it presents over 150 individual productions from Canada and around the world. It’s so popular, shows are drawn by lottery and Carlberg’s was one of 13 companies, out of 158 in her category, to strike it lucky.
Carlberg intends to make the most of her opportunity, even if she has to laugh at herself. And she’s candid.
“I’m 20 pounds heavier than when I got married," she readily confesses. “Like many people who are trying to lose weight, it’s one step forward, one step back."
Carlberg describes How I Lost One Pound: The Musical as a comedic romp.
“It’s a collection of songs and monologues about our obsession with our image of our bodies," she says. “Instead, let’s sit back and relax and believe that we truly are completely beautiful and awesome despite our shape or size. Down with socially expected and up with authentically alive!"
Carlberg majored in dance at York University and then studied writing for the stage and screen at George Brown College. She also studied improv, comedy and clowning at Humber and Second City. Currently, the mother of three performs in theatre and stand-up clubs around Toronto and New York City.
Barbara Weigelt, Chiamaka Ugwu, Kate Abrams, Lauren Wolkowski, Melissa Verwey, Megan O’Kelly, Michelle Paré and Rosaleen Kavanagh are the actors tasked with bringing the message to audiences.
At least two have Mississauga ties: Ugwu is entering her third year of Theatre and Drama Studies in University of Toronto Mississauga and Sheridan College’s joint theatre program and Weigelt played Mme. Pomponette in Mississauga Players’ Love by the Bolt last November.
“Now here’s the thing, I can’t sing," says Weigelt, of her new role. “But I will try to make a joyful noise or maybe lipsync. My philosophy includes getting out of my comfort zone, so this is my big chance."
The 2012 Toronto Fringe Festival runs July 4-15 at more than two dozen venues, mostly in the west end. It is expected to draw more than 70,000 people over the 12 days.
How I Lost One Pound: The Musical will be at Theatre Passe Muraille.

The play is part of the TO Fringe Festival and will play sometime between July 4-15th. I am definitely going to her preview evening in June at the library as it's about 10 minutes from my house. I just had a great conversation with one of the librarians there and apparently she's been writing all of her plays at that library for years - they didn't know what she did/who she was until recently! LOL
