Problem with diarrhea - suggestions?
VSG on 05/11/12
I am in my first week of Pureed Foods , although this was happening last week, on Full Fluids as well. Every time I have a BM, it's watery diarrhea, usually in the evenings. I'm getting in all my fluids but not a lot of food (not very hungry, but I do eat & manage to get at least 60 grams of protein in). My sleeve seems to get full awfully fast on very little food. An average day's food is usually a scrambled egg, 1/3 c Greek yogurt, 1/3 c cottage cheese and 1/2 c SF Jello & a protein shake or 1/2 c of SF pudding. Sometimes I'll have a SF fruit juice bar for a snack or a couple of bites of mushed up tuna & mayo. Can anyone suggest what I can take to get rid of the diarrhea? I bought products for constipation but that's definitely not my problem these days! Thanks!

Ah Deb, I am sorry that you are having troubles. I don't want to suggest anything because I am pre op and might tell you the wrong thing.

You are still consuming a lot of liquids so it's mostly going to be liquids in liquids out. I would take some metamucil and see if that helps absorb some of the water in your colon. You can buy capsules now too so you don't have to mix them in water but you do have to be able to drink 8 oz to get them down. Not sure how long it takes you to get 8 oz of water in you at this stage. If you can't do that, you could try some immodeum to settle things down.

If it were me, I'd wait another week before doing anything and see if things change once you get more solid foods into you.

What about pepto bismol
pepto is not to be taken post op-it contains salicylic acid which is chemically similar to aspirin-aspirin being a NSAID.
I would suggest if you are concerned about the diarrhea call your center or family MD. You should be careful of dehydration especially in the early stages as fluids are so important.
Have you had any lactose issues in the past? perhaps that is an issue now? You mention your protein shake-is it one you have had in the past with no difficulty?
The diet for diarrhea is rice apple sauce bananas-I know we cannot do rice however you could do apple sauce, bananas would probably be too dense at this point.
I know its no help but I still have the opposite problem ;)

I agree - call the clinic.
If you are ingesting Greek joghurt, that should be binding you up, not causing diarrhea.
I think you may have either
(1) an intestinal bug of some kind, or
(2) be lactose-intolerant now.
If I had to guess, I would think lactose-intolerance is your issue, post-op. About 50% of us develop an intolerance to lactose.
It's not hard to avoid lactose noce you're on the lookout for it - many many dairy products are now available w/o lactose. And you can switch to soy-based joghurts etc for the pureed stage.

. I have never heard of anyone with this problem, just the opposite. Talk to a professional, as much as I enjoy hearing from everyone else's stories.
