Gallbladder Removal??

Coming back home to Obesity help for some guidance.

I had my surgery in Oct2010.  I've lost 160lbs.  I've gone through so many wows and changes in my life.  I am now embarking on a new change.  After losing the weight I expected to have problems with my gallbladder.  I'm not surprised by any means but I am worried.  I have to have my gallbladder removed on July 23.  I'm worried about having it done because I don't know if the surgeon is fully informed about Gastric Patients.  Is there anything I should make sure to inform him about?  Anything I should know myself?  I've tried to do some research on line but I figured I would come here to see who can give me some insight.  This is what I know, correct me if I'm wrong, NAID, right?  No sugars?  Anything else?

Hi Trudy, why don't you give your first surgeon a call and ask him for some advice? Perhaps HE can do the surgery or you can have the new surgeon give him a call for a consult.
I had an open cholecystectomy (galbladder removal) about 32 years ago. I think it's a bit different now!

you can have NSAIDS through IV just not oral.

I am allergic to narcotics and when I had my surgery my surgeon had me on IV toroidal. she said they only cause problems when they sit in your pouch

Oh and GB removal is quite comon after WLS I am sure your surgeon will know whats in store

Hey Trudy,

I had my gallbladder out before WLS.  So I don't have an answer, but you could call your clinic and ask them if there is anything you should remind/ask your surgeron about.  They would know for sure what to watch for.

Hi Trudy

I had my gallbladder out 11 months after RNY. I had my bariatric surgeon take it out. I'm glad she did as I trust her with my life. One of the main reasons I was referred back to her was the fact that I could get in a whole lot quicker to see her (I know, hard to believe). I had my surgery long before I ever would have even seen a surgeon here in Barrie for a consult.

I don't think you need to tell your surgeon anything specifically as long as he/she is aware that you have had WLS, that should be sufficient. As for what you need to know, routine cholecystectomy information should be about it.

Good luck and I hope your recovery goes well!

Any surgeon *****moved gallbladders is going to be familiar with RNY. It's extremely common and there is nothing about the RNY that is going to effect your gallbladder surgery.

You can have NSAIDs by IV, but you can always ask for narcotic pain management instead if you're more comfortable with that.

If you're concerned about sugar, just request diabetic meals and no juice - don't bother your surgeon with this, just mention to your nurse once you're brought up to a patient floor after surgery.
I had OHIP approved Duodenal Switch surgery with Dr. Dennis Hong at St. Joseph's Hamilton on March 7th, 2012. Want more information on the DS in Ontario? Send me a private message!

Hi there i just had my gallbladder out june 6th. My first attack ever in march landed me in the hospital for 4 days with pancreatitis because it was blocking a duct.
my surgeon who saw me when i was admitted got all the information from my gastric bypass surgeon and saw no issues in doing my surgery for me a bonus becase it means ididnt have to travel to st joes hamilton and it got done here on my hometown, london.

surgeons are informed on gastric bypass i have found .
you cant have nsaids at all....even IV because it still does the samething as a pill, straight out of a doctors mouth.
i had my surgery done laproscopic and outpatient i went home that day....and i was worried because i had 2 surgeries and the seond one they found quite a bit of scar tissue and the surgeon that did my gallbladder said not much scar tissue there and he was able to do my surgery wit no issues.
best of luck to you
Have a great day....Kany

Thank you all for your input :)

Its great to know that I can come here to get second opinions and a different point of view.  I don't think it matters too much on who is doing the surgery to me but I am just nervous that when he did a stomach scope a while back he made a comment that "it wasnt what I epected", his words.  I told him that I had the Lap Gastric Bypass so I was surprised myself when he made that comment.  I think I will have to ask him to elaborate on that before he does the surgery.  Just for reassurance I guess on my part.  I just want to make sure he knows what he's getting into...literally.  I also hope they dont overdose me on meds because it seems that my body absorbs it right away....well vodka does that to me.  LOL

Anyway, thanks again.
