Cost & Vitamins Pre-op
Good Evening Everyone,
I have a couple questions regarding the other costs associated with having the surgery, as well as vitamins.
I feel fortunate that OHIP is covering the actual costs of the surgery itself however, I was wondering what other costs are associated pre and post; this is what I gather: opti fast, any hotel stays, post op vitamins and such...I know the opti fast is not cheap but if someone could give me a range that would be greatly appreciated.
I take a multi vitamin every day and always have but should I take any other vitamins pre op? I have a list of vitamins and supplements that I will need post op but just wondering.
Thanks all, I am far out from surgery though :P

I'm one week post-op in Ottawa.
Optifast was $100. a week for me. I think it is the same or close everywhere.
Post-op vitamins can really be as cheap or as expensive as you like. Each centre gives you acceptable options. I know lots just get them from Costco or Walmart.
Don't know about hotels sorry.
Good luck!!

I am preop and they said opti fast was going to cost me about $160 for two weeks.
Vitamins are a range depending on what you get. I think probably on the low end about $30-$90/mth.
TWH told me you have to take two multivits a day, and Cal/Vit D twice a day, B12 you have some options.
For the first little while you might want to budget for new cloths as the weight falls off.

Hi Chelsea,
I don't know where you are but I had my surgery 2 weeks ago at HRRH and my Optifast was $225 and I bought my chewable vitamins at the hospital pharmacy for $542. Although I had many vitamins at home, they were not chewable. Because the RNY has a malabsorption component, regular vitamins are not broken down sufficiently for us post op so we really do need the chewable ones. Unfortunately there are many people who end up malnourished because of taking the wrong vitamins. While I've had no difficulty swallowing any meds I take, there are some who seem to have difficulty with pills being too large. You can purchase the vitamins from Bariatric Advantage, which is where the pharmacy buys them. I have already saved so much over the last month from not buying meat, vegetables, fruit and Timmies sandwiches that I think they will pay for themselves soon!

Sorry Hanneli, I hope you didn't have a heart attack! That was for everything; heparin injections, Prevacid, ( 1 time costs), liquid tylenol and vitamins for many months, but yes, that was my bill. They told us to budget for minimum $60-80/month for the vitamins, but you also have to purchase protein powder and/or protein drinks, which I have 1 or 2/day. If you are going to HRRH, then you will have many appointments at $18/a pop for parking. I did, however, discover when talking to the parking attendant, that they have a 'secret' pass which is 15 parkings for $45. I think it is usually reserved for chemo patients.
I believe that the hospitals have special rates at local hotels for $100+ per day for you post op if you live further than an hour away from the hospital.
I hope that is more clear.

ahh ok.. do you have a drug benefit plan? I would imagine things like heperin and prevacid would be covered by that if you have a drug plan?
$18! that is robbery.. in Sudbury it is $4 at the Memorial site where the bariatric centre is.
