Stats
Hi everyone; I do not post often but from the tracking I often wonder what the stats are. Let me explain, I wonder how many patients each centre gets through a year, at one time, how many are they dealing with, ect. I know it is extremely broad but I like numbers, I can make sense of it all. Thanks anyone, if you have any input I would greatly appreciate it.
There was a link on the ontariobaritraicnetwork.com website, but the page is missing from the government page now. The only other article that I could find with the same quote came from another newsletter.
Essentially they do just under 2100 surgeries a year in Ontario, at least that's what OHIP was funding......

I came across a page on Hamilton St Joe's website that said they would be funded to perform 450 for 2012, if I can find the link I will post it.

Referal: November 2011 to Windsor Assessment Center, Orientation: February 9th, 2012, Request Transfer to Hamilton: March 23, 2012, Transfer madness for April, May, June, Abdominal Ultrasound: August 1, 2012, Dietician & SW: October 3, 2012,
Scope: November 8, 2012, Internist: November 14, 2012, Surgeon: November 27th, 2012
Surgery: April 10, 2013. VSG and gallbladder removed.
Ok... Well let's say I know 1 number. Number of Surgeries OHIP would pay for in 2012 at HRRH/St. Joe's Toronto program. The reason I know this number is the woman doing my orientation was very happy to tell us they had increased it from 500 to 550 for the year and the additional 50 surgeries was a very good thing. That was Oct. and there were 50 more they could do this year.
So...
Going with that... And even if we err on the side of caution with numbers... I would take an educated guess on surgery numbers along the lines of:
500 for Ottawa
500 for Guelph
500 for Hamilton
500 for TWH/TEGH/St. Mikes
500 for HRRH/St. Joe's Toronto
So a minimum of 2500 surgeries. This could be higher... I am erring on the side of caution here.
Now... There are also the Regional Assessment Centers which feed the Bariatric Centers of Excellence. So... Windsor, Kingston, Thunder Bay and Sudbury...
Those in the process currently, or those going through the process recently would number in the thousands.
My orientation had approximately 45 names between the morning and afternoon session. They are doing 1-2 of those per month. That would be just over 1000 people in Orientation a year. Just through HRRH.
I would say that each Regional Assessment Centers processing patients, and Bariatric Center of Excellence is seeing their number of 500 surgeries (let alone the referrals they are processing as well****ur if OHIP boosted the number of surgeries.
Some places will have more, and some will have less... Which stands to reason that there is a valid reason why some face a long wait time... At the very least we are talking THOUSANDS of people taking this step, or at least looking into this process every year. Of which it is a minimum of Orientation, Surgeon, Registered Nurse, Dietician, Social Worker, Internist/PATT's, Surgeon... So a minimum of 7 appointment slots for the average person and may be higher based on required tests, etc. It truly is impossible to estimate the pre-op process and numbers.
I can only go with the current process when thinking about the numbers of people in post-op at any given time... here is post-op only with the current preferred appointment schedule:
500 1 month appointments.
500 3 month appointments.
500 6 month appointments.
500 1 year appointments.
500 2 year appointments.
500 3 year appointments
500 4 year appointments.
500 5 year appointments.
That is a minimum of 4000 appointments to fit in with all new referrals, and those waiting to make it through the process once they make it to full stride with the existing plan.
Not considering sometimes it is the dietician, sometimes the nurse, sometimes the surgeon, and sometimes more than one of those...
The numbers are staggering aren't they?
ETA: Greeneyes has some links I didn't... Though I know the 2085 was the projected, and wonder how many other places OHIP re-evaluated their number of funded surgeries for.... (i.e. HRRH moving from 500 to 550 in the autumn, etc.)
