Surgery outside Canada

Just wondering if anyone has had surgery outside of Canada?  I am super impatient and don't think I can wait a year or two for surgery. I have put on a ton of weight this past year and can't imagine getting even bigger before I can have surgery. I feel like absolute crap and don't know how much more I can take. I have read great things about surgery in Mexico. At only $4500, I can actually afford it and can have it done next month rather then next year. Guess I'm just looking for thoughts from others.

Many have gone to Mexico to self pay with no issues at all.  Just an FYI, not all surgeons are reputable.  You may want to list who you are considering going to and see if anybody went to him.  You can also visit the Mexico forum on here to read up on specific surgeons.

$4500? Sounds kind of low... A friend of mine had self-paid VSG in Mexico three years ago and it was $8000. Could the prices drop so much?

Just to be safe, research your clinic/surgeon. Lots of people from States go to Mexico for wls, ask around. There are awesome, reputable docs  as well as ... um... not so reputable ones, like Dr. Joffe disqualified in Canada a few years ago and operating in Mexico now.

Regarding "proven" places to have it done: in Montreal you can get self-paid wls with Gagner around 16-20K, in States I would highly recommend Dr. Graber in Utica/Syracuse, his price tag was around 18K for RnY for OHIP, but self-paid are often a *****eaper. Also important issue is follow-up care. Think, where you will go in case of complications...

Nata, a very happy DSer!

I was one of the last group of people allowed to have my surgery in the USA, can't say if I would go to a place like Mexico etc...I know I have heard good and not so good stories from there,

I can understand the impatience..but wouldn't you rather work on your issues ahead of time..this is not a fix it all, and if you have "put on a ton of weight" this past year it sounds as those you may have some things that you need to work on.

I am NOT trying to be judgemental..or condescending in any fashion..it isn't a quick fix and if you can't wait to go through the process and meet the criteria including the fast before the surgery...what makes you think you will be successful if you obtain the QUICK FIX???

It took me two years from the time I contacted my family doctor for a referral to a doctor that was experienced in RNY..then the process took  a year from that to approval from OHIP...

Also I am not sure what would happen if you get your surgery outside of Canada and something goes wrong..I would think that OHIP might put up a fight if you had something wrong happen and required medical assistance...because they have not approved it.

Cheaper is NOT always better...whether it be in leather sofa's, cars or sugeries

here I am almost 4 years later and I am truly glad that it took as long as it did...it taught me to be somewhat patience and to work really hard at maintaining....I am still maintaining a 104lbs weight loss....I did gain 4 lbs this past Christmas...

prior to surgery 323lbs....4 years post-op maintaining between 108- 114 lb loss.

life is AMAZING when you continue on the right path~!.  Use your surgeons gift to the fullest~!
