Lorraine, you need to know that the intestinal portion of the DS is reversible. COMPLETELY REVERSIBLE. The only part that is irreversible is the edge of the stomach that is removed. That is not a big deal, however, because DSers have a completely normally functioning stomach post-op. It remains a normal stomach that is simply smaller. There are no "pouch" issues to contend with. At 11 months out of surgery I can now eat a normal sized meal -- including a whole pork chop or a whole steak, or a whole chicken breast. The more critical part of the DS operation (which helps DSers maintain their weight loss long term) is the intestinal portion. No portion of the intestines are removed ... they are simply rearranged so malabsorption can occur. (This is why we have to take vitamins/minerals daily post-op) If a DS postie runs into any nutritional problems, the intestines can be revised to their original formation or other optimal arrangement. The DS is a very adaptable surgery that is customized to each and every patient. One of the reasons I chose the DS was that the intestinal part be easily reversed. Because DSers are left with a normally functioning stomach, reversal of this part is pointless. As for the gas and BM issues, they are not a big deal. Remember, everybody's poops and farts stink --- whether you've had surgery or not! Ask any long terms DSer and they'll tell you that their bathroom issues (if any) are completely tolerable. Best wishes Wendy
