Hi Abby,
You can do the liquids! Just remember that it's helping to shrink your liver to make the surgery go more smoothly. I just had my bypass on Thursday. When I was on liquids, I could have decaf coffee and tea, Crystal Light and Kool Aid, jello, and broth. I can't remember if I was allowed to have anything else. You should have a list of liquids from your surgeon. Good luck!!!

You'll be great Abby.
tea
decaf coffee
sugar free popsicles--these were my saving grace both before and after the surgery
sugar free icees
crystal light
broth
jello
water
any kind of sugar free, caffeine free beverage.
Oh and when you are in the hospital, they are going to try to give you crystal light lemonade.. that is not necessarily the first thing you are going to want. Ask for the icees. They have them and they are GOOD and much easier to get down than the crystal light that early out. I am going to do my very best to get there to see you. Please have someone call me to let me know how you are doing. Is there going to be someone there with you? Is your DH going to be there ?
I will let everyone here know how you are doing! You'll be great and Dr. S is awesome!

Abby,
I know the thought of a liquid diet was very scary for me, too... but it was also what I had to do to get to surgery day. Turns out, that was very manageable. Between jello, broth, water, more jello, etc., I wasn't hungry. And after you take the laxative, you're not going to want to eat too much more anyway. The hardest part of it was that I had a late surgery time, and with no water from 9 PM the night before, I was REALLY thirsty by the time I got into pre-op. BUT... that was a relatively short time and was definitely not a problem after surgery!
Don't worry - the time will fly and you will do just fine. Hang in there!

Are you on full liquids or clear liquids before surgery?
Clear liquids:
Broth
Decaf Tea
Decaf Coffee
Decaf iced tea
sf jello
sf ice pops
sf kool aid
water
Full liquids:
low fat Milk
low fat/no sugar added yogurt
low fat/no sugar added pudding
Drink drink drink as much as you can...I chewed gum, went for a lot of walks away from food and went to bed early a few nights, too (I was basically on full liquids for 2 weeks before surgery due to weight gain...I had one healthy meal, just protein and veggies, once a day, or sometimes not at all...the rest was liquids....hence the many nights in bed early!)
Tell yourself you are gonna get through this one minute at a time. You don't have to think about the whole 48 hours. You have to think about the moment you are in.
48 hours is a split second in the grand scheme of the rest of your life you have to live and all the moments you have already lived. You can get through that!
