so Im posting to make myself accountable and get my ass back on track.. I have a special needs daughter and things have been really crazy lately and i find myself not eating right , not getting in enough protein and just eating crap.. now not the crap I would have eaten before surger chocolate, cheese puffs pasta etc.. but like today my lunch was a cocopop with reduce fat onion and chives cream cheese- which is not alot of carbs or calories but really no good nutrition and dinner or a snack size of colby jack cheese and pork rhines what the hell not acceptable.. my ass is making dinner tommorrow and some fast crock pot meals so I already have them in the fridge and ready to go if anyone has any good ones send them my way..

so this is my post to make myself get back on track .. cause this may not be totally bad but for me it is unacceptable and I need more protein ...

also right now I cant afford the gym was wondering .. what exercises people do besides walking to help firm it up a lil bit and of course kick weight loss back into high gear.. I really think I want boxing gloves- exercixe wise they would be great but also fo rmy mental health and frustration would be awesome..

thanks all in advance..

The "suggested" weight limit on mine says 330..but I will be honest I recieved mine as a gift right before my surgery and used it at 384..didnt have any problems with it. Not to say others haven't. I think they are required to put a weight limit on everything these days. When I registered my treadmill for the warrenty..I was asked how much I weighed because it had a weight limit of 275 lbs. That I thought was crazy, I couldnt use a treadmill if I weighed more then that..WTH!!!
Now if you have a Wii..but not the Wii Fit Plus..you can buy games like the Biggest Loser and you do not have to have the balance board for all of those exercises it works without it.
Good luck!! I know my downfall is staying motivated to exercise, I have a gym membership but I want someone to push me to go. With school and 3 kids I can always find excuses of why I am to busy.

Just remember this is a journey and these times where you find yourself off track actually do have value to them. They show you what you need to be working on emotionally. So find the lesson and move back to the plan. I love my boxing classes.

Recognizing you're not perfect is totally acceptable! None of us are perfect - for some reason when we have this surgery the mentality sets in that we have to be perfect but we are still human - the best part of your post is that you recognize areas where you're struggling and are working to fix them - that's wonderful!

Yes, this early out (and forever, actually) you must maintain those protein levels or you're going to start feeling like crap - make a shake, grab a low-carb protein bar, keep some string cheese or yogurts - stuff like that handy. Some days are easier than others - I'm over 2 years out and I still have days where I know I'm not meeting my numbers, but most days I'm okay -you'll get there, too - it's all a habit. My nut told me once that you can form good habits as well as bad, and it takes about 4-6 weeks to form a habit. So keep working at it.

Can you carry hand weights when you walk? Bump up your speed or distance for a while? I had joined Curves and liked it but it's almost impossible for me to get there now. Planet Fitness is cheap - $10 a month I think if there's one near you. If not keep at the walking - that is one of the best exercises you can do.

And hey, quit beating yourself up - you're doing an awesome job!!

Glad to hear you have a plan as far as making better food more accessible for you and stuff.  That will certainly help!

As far as exercise goes....I like the idea of adding hand weights or something to the mix as you're walking.  Go for longer times and/or pick up your pace a bit in small amonts to really get yourself moving and aiding the weight loss.

There are probably lots of exercise instructions online you can look up that can be done at home with household things.  Things like squats against a wall or other non weight bearing activities that increase toning and stuff.  If you do get some light hand weights for walking, you could look up things like bicep/tricep exercises you can do at home to help as well by using them

We all slip up from time to time but seeing the pattern is a good thing and getting back on track. Since you are in the honeymoon period of this journey glad to see you caught it to nip it in the bud now. Good for you!

If you have cable and on demand access they have a exersise section with all types of workouts for free and they change them every few weeks. I used them for a while early out and a good source of exercise. Wii is another good at home exercise choice. Like Kathy said if you have a Planet Fitness around you they are 10 dollars a month...

Good luck let us know how you are doing ;)

Jenn,

Good for you to recognize the pattern and get it in check now.  That's a good sign that you're working on the "head" side of this as well as the mechanics of nutrition.  I've found (over time) that "speed" is no excuse - it's just as fast to grab something healthy to eat (like a cheese stick and an orange) as it is to grab something crappy (a bag of chips or cookies).  So I've eliminated that as an excuse for poor eating in my life. ALthough my head still tries to fight me on that at times ;-).

A good source for recipes is bariatriceating.com and for slow cooker recipes, see if you can get a copy of "Fix It and Forget It Lightly" which is a good source.  You still have to be careful, not everything in there is WLS-friendly and some people's definition of "light" is a far cry from ours... but even in those cases, the recipes are generally easily adaptable to be WLS-friendly.  There are some new slow-cooker healthy cookbooks out, too.  And sparkpeople.com is another good source of recipes.

Speaking of sparkpeople - I would suggest that you sign up if you haven't yet.  You can do your nutrition and fitness tracking there (it's easy and nicely done).  They also have a variety of exercises and exercise ideas, so you can put together a routine at home that works for you.  Each one is demonstrated in a video so you know how to do it correctly.  Most have variants for with/without weights, etc.

When I was early out, I started walking.  I got an ipod and loaded it with some of my favorite fast music (138 beats per minute or more).  Each day I pushed myself to walk a little faster and a little farther (making sure that I was breaking a good sweat and that my heart rate was nicely up in the training range each time, in other words).  When that started feeling like I needed a little more, I added hand weights to the mix.  At first, that was just swinging my arms a bit.  Then I progressed to adding "punches" and "blocks" with the weights as I was walking.  That had the wonderful effect of helping to tone arms and shoulders along with upping the cardio.

Eventually, I started jogging small segments of the walk, then connecting those small segments.  Before I realized it, I was running significant portions of my "walk."

I didn't join a gym until the weather turned crappy, which was 9 months out from my surgery.  At that point, it was a convenience decision, not a cardio necessity.  However, joining the gym was one of the best investments I've made in myself - it allowed me to expand my "fun" in exercise and kept me invigorated by allowing me to try different things so I was continually enjoying movement, rather than seeing it as a "chore" that I did reluctantly.  In other words, it took away those excuses that I would give to myself for why I was going to skip movement one day or another.  When I finally did join a gym, I looked for one that was affordable, offered a discount for my workplace and/or insurance plan, was authorized by my insurance (Keystone has a reimbursement program that if you go 160 times in a year, you get back $150), was near my home or my work so I had no travel excuses, included classes in membership, and was CLEAN.  I found a gym that's $49/month including all classes, and meets all of the above requirements - beautiful!

Over time, I've also used Wii Fit (which I love!) and on demand fitness workouts (free on comcast).  I've done drop-in ($5/class) Zumba (before I joined the gym, where I coudl go as part of my memberhip).  There are a ton of options out there that are free or cheap, with a little ingenuity.

You're doing just great so far - as you push to the next level, you're going to find so much more energy than you ever knew you had!  And that energy will give you extra resources physically and mentally in dealing with life's challenges.
