Are bariatric surgeons also Regular surgeons too?? Confused??

MY surgeon, Dr. Featherstone here in Michigan is a general surgeon who specializes in breast.  He is who took care of me when I had breast cancer both times.  Actually he got into bariatric surgery during my last breast cancer. I kept telling him not to get to busy with these surgeries so he wouldn't have time for me.  Well instead he can do bariatric surgery on me in July.  That's the bad part he is so busy I got a date of July 31.
Not to sound rude but when I went for my one year checkup with him, I was like what the heck is going on??? All the chairs in the waiting room were extra wide.  Then when I got in the room the chair in there was the same way. It hit my like a ton of bricks, then I felt stupid.  But I will say it was nice to be some place that the chair actually fit. LOL

dr featherstone was my surgeon! hes excellant. the office is called grand traverse surgery for a reason though, they do more than just weight loss surgeries. i know that one of them did some procedure on my hubbys cousin not to long ago here. yes dr featherstone is busy but hes the best and i wouldnt trade him for another surgeon.

First off, prayers for both of you!
Second, my surgeon was also trained in trauma but now his practice is limited to bariatrics and plastics following bariatrics.  I think it is pretty common to have your bariatric surgeon do other types of surgery as well.

I definitely know that if I need skin removal of the tummy area after I am done losing, I will be using Dr. Nye once again.  He is awesome.

   Thank You so much for your Prayers! We sure need them. I called Dr. Ameri's office, my surgeon. They said it would be fine for my Husband to see him today! I'm so glad about that! I'm so worried! I hate for hubby to have to have surgery and I just had it..I'm having open.. So my healing time will take longer. I need to be healthy for him. So I'm really on edge now! When I had my RNY the surgeon was looking around at other things (since he is in there anyways).  He saw a little node on my liver.  Cut it off and did a biopsy.  It was nothing, but it was great to have it checked while he was in there.  That is where the general surgery can really help...esp. if there are complications that may go on.  Brian

     I'm so glad everything came out alright for you!  My 2ND surgeon I went to, was doing surgery on man, who's wife and family were totally against him having WLS! And they were all very upset with him!!! But he was firm and said he was going through with it!!! Needless to say, Thank God he went ahead and had it done!
     Because when The surgeon was doing Lap RNY, he didn't like what he saw and changed it to open!! And he was right! The poor fellow had stomach cancer! So The surgeon had to stop the surgery and close him up. And sent him right down to another surgeon was a specialist in that area!
    This was back in September 2008. The had to go for chemo and radiation.. It was bad. He came too one if the meetings and gave a testimony about it. They don't know yet what is going to happen, but at least it gave him longer to live! He had no signs of it at all!!! I sure Pray he is doing well. Thank you so much for your reply. Alizka
