Lactose intolerance

It's bad.  Just wanted to know who all else out there has it, and how you're coping.
I was the girl who loved to drink a tall glass of cold milk.  I had given up milk and milk and cereal, ice cream, and larger amounts of cheese (I can tolerate a tiny bit still).  But I was still drinking a little milk in my coffee but have been having horrible stomach/lower back pains after my evening coffee and my only conclusion is that it must be my milk in my coffee (too bizzarre that it happens about 30 min.-1hr. after most times).  I didn't think it'd bother me this much!  I guess just buy lactose free milk?  What all should I steer clear of?

I ended up with it...although I am slowly going back to it by using about an ounce in each cup of coffee...so far it has been ok...although it seems to be making my BM's more often...which I'm not complaining about but attribute at least partially to an intolerance....coffee alone wasn't doing that...

I also was a milk drinker...to the tune of as much as a gallon a day until I was out of high school...then about a gallon every few days...now I have had one glass post op that came along with horrible cramping and all that...then the little amount I have with my coffee daily...oh crud...I forgot to turn off the coffee pot in my office...dangit....

also, I haven't noticed a major problem with cheese, but I am only able to eat so little that that could be why...and I don't eat soft cheeses much...

I got it too, and to this day I can't do full fat milk. I do a small amount of skim milk, but that's it for milk. All cheeses seem to work okay, but I do get some gas if I eat a bunch of full fat cheese. As for ice cream, I switched to sorbet a long time ago.

Buttercream icing in cake/cupcake icing seems to give me hell. I can eat tons of yogurt without issue. I drink non-dairy creamer in my coffee and always have so I haven't had any issue with coffees.

I hate it too...but alas I use 1/2 & 1/2 and it doesn't see to bother me, or the powdered stuff for my coffee.  Other then that I have pretty much given up milk.

So far I'm the only person my doc has run into that was lactose intolerant BEFORE surgery and is NOT after! I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to drink my protein shakes because I was drinking soy shakes before surgery and after, they didn't go down well. Now, I do milk, cheese, everything dairy I Couldn't do before! Crazy, huh?

Lactaid (or the store brand) was something I took daily and kept in my purse. Also, you should try acidophilus milk... It's usually cheaper than the Lactaid milk and tastes just the same as regular milk. I just bought some hemp milk (unsweetened vanilla) and it's really good, but has a high fat content. Silk is awesome and the almond milks are yummy, too!

Good luck!

I also became lactose intolerant after surgery. Can't drink milk or eat ice cream but cheese, yogurt and cottage cheese are okay. I can even eat a little cereal with milk in it...I have no suggestions. All the lactose free stuff does not taste good to me so I just don't drink it. Your new pic is awesome! You look wonderful!

Lactaid tablets will allow you to eat dairy again, they provide the missing enzyme. I always make sure to have them handy, at home and in my purse. They even have chewable ones, those are what I keep in my purse then I'm always ready. They are sold in the grocery pharmacy area by the digestive products. Go forth and enjoy dairy!

I really like almond breeze unsweetened vanilla. I get it at Costco but I think they carry it most places. Good luck!
