How much were you drinking the first few days???
Hi OH! I am 3 days post op, and I am happy to report that so far, so good. Minor incision pain in my belly button. I haven't had any hunger, and I haven't eaten FOOD since Monday night!! I have been trying to stay hydrated, but I don't want to hurt myself! I was just wondering if you all were able to get ALL of your liquids in during these days. If not all, how much!!
My Dr. said 64 oz. There was no way but i guess you just have to sip sip sip all day. I even woke up at night a drank but still I got dehydrated and had to go get IV's. Just do your bes****ch your pee ( it should be light ) and my tongue was coated when I was dehydrated and I felt really bad. Sorry for the gross information!
I've been getting in 64-68oz including 80g of protein since I came home on day 3. It is possible, you just have to be smart about it... I detailed what I'm doing in my latest blog post, it's working like a charm and I'm not at all hungry or worried about dehydrating.
Here's the snip from my post... although you've already left the hospital (per #1 below), you might be able to find some of these medicine cups at a pharmacy, but anything that lets you easily measure out 1 fluid oz will work:
Tips on Getting in Post-Op Fluids
You'll want to come up with a plan to get all your fluids in because if you think just taking a sip whenever you think of it will be sufficient, you're dead wrong. My surgeon said if I were drink 1oz every 15 mins during the time I'm awake each day, that will ensure I get everything in.
Never being one to blow off doctor's orders, here's what I'm doing:
1.) Before leaving the hospital, ask them for a sleeve of medicine cups that you can use to measure out your fluids (my doctor told me to do this... even if yours doesn't, ask for them)
2.) If you don't already have an alarm feature on your phone, download an app that gives you one.
3.) First thing in the morning, make a 40g protein shake (I recommend Unjury Chocolate Splendor, 2 scoops in 12 oz of water or skim milk) and keep it next to you along with those medicine cups the hospital gave you.
4.) Set your phone alarm to go off every 15 minutes, whenever it does, drink--sip, don't gulp--1 oz (1 medicine cup full) of your protein shake
5.) Once you finish that entire shake, make another 40g shake and repeat until that's gone
6.) Now you've completed your 80g per day of protein intake, continue with whatever full liquid diet fluids you'd like for the rest of the day
7.) Designate 2 times per hour, either at the :00 and :30 mark or at the :15 and :45 mark to do 5 puffs on your spirometer
8.) Every other hour, get up and walk around for as long as you feel comfortable... try to build up your stamina each day so you're able to spend more time on your feet than you could the day before.

I'm glad Little Miss Sunshine could be so organized. I, however, could never manage that much organization in my soul !!
What I did was to divide my "liquids" into meals, and sipping. When on clears, I drank broth for meals, ate jello for dessert, and sipped warm tea, and water for liquids. That kept me sane, and kept me drinking all day.
Did I get in my 64 oz at first ? Heck no. But I dran****il I thought I was going to float away. I made sure that I did not become dehydrated. As I had no intenetion of going back to the hospital !
Push yourself and try to know how much you are getting.

From the first day I tracked (4/15-- sleeved 4/11) I was getting 57 oz fluids including shakes.. it went up from there and I hit 64 plus a few days later.. I was very scared of dehydration, so I made like it was my full time job drinking water.. now I think my hand is permanently fused in the shape of my water bottle, but it's a small price to pay.. :)
