Preop diet help needed.
Ok, I confess. I have really struggled with this 2 week liquid diet. I would've done so much better just having a low calorie high protein diet. It is what it is. So here's my question.
My surgery is Thursday morning and I'm 100% dedicated to no more slip ups before then. Would I be better doing 2 days of pure clears before surgery? I'm supposed to drink 5 meal replacements a day and then Wednesday, the day before surgery, no more protein shakes, just clears. If I went on clears only a day early, would that help shrink my liver even quicker?
I'm just trying to jump start this liver shrinking as best I can. I'll do whatever it takes to jump start it since I'm behind the 8 ball now.
Thanks in advance for your help friends!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you really need to stick to what your surgeon tells you. I had to do 2 weeks of clear liquids (so no protein for me). You liver needs to shrink as much as possible to make surgery safer for you.

Hi Ro
Im also having my surgery in Atlanta on Wednesday 7 Dec and very nervous. I have not been able to stick to the 70 grams of carbs per day (more like 100 and perhaps more). Yes it would be easier to just do low calorie diet. I was not instructed to take mael replacements or shakes so it is up to my own devices but doing the best I can. Im so nervous about the surgery and concerned Im makinga mistake?

It won't make any difference. If you want to do a longer clear liquid stage it wont hurt but I dont see it helping much either (except really clearing out the bowls). I have been on meal replacement shakes for 3 months... cheated a few times. Down 49 pounds.
but seriously, two weeks is easy, you can do it.

I don't think clears will shrink it anymore than the protein drinks will. The other consideration is that you really need protien in your system to help you heal.
I fell off the wagon a couple of times too so I know how you feel. After that I stuck to the plan 100% and all was well. If you do the same you'll be fine.

First, some don't even have a pre-op diet and do just fine. Now that being said, a solid (actual food) low carb/high protein diet will get the SAME results as a liquid low carb/high protein diet. Think Atkins. Honestly, I don't get the benefit of clears before surgery. I had surgery almost one year ago and was suppose to do a two week medifast/healthwise diet. The stuff (to ME) was just horrible! After doing my own research and having a conversation with my NUT, she basically agreed with what I said above. I ate actual food just low carb/high protein. My liver was perfect per the doctor. Good luck! ~Jennifer

If it makes you feel better.
I started pre-op on 11/21. I was told if I did really well then Thanksgiving I could eat.
I ate a very conservative 6" plate on T-Giving and even told my nurse how well I did and she told me good job.
I would not worry about it at this point as it is water under the bridge but I would make damn sure to follow it going forward.
HOPE that helps!
