What were the easiest proteins to EAT 3 to 4 weeks post op

 Hey everyone,

Today I am 3 weeks post op. (I will do a "what I've learned at 3 weeks" later today) I am trying to get on my schedule now of 3 meals, no snacking, etc.

For breakfast I will still do a protein shake but would like to incorporate more meat, albeit small portions for lunch and dinner.

So far I have tried salmon and I could tolerate that well. Chicken salad not so well. Tuna salad, so so. King crab meat OMG yum! (but waaaay to expensive to eat all the time)

Does anyone have ideas or can you share your experiences? Was thinking poultry would be the hardest to eat now and will wait a while for that. What are other good and soft protein choices?

Thanks everyone!

Yep I'm eating those daily. I was thinking about making some chili but afraid the meat if I use turkey will be too course. Might try beef instead and see how it does.

Some people dont like them, but I plan to try no salt added sardines in water. 3 oz of sardines canned in water is 20.91g protein!!

Any white fish ( sole, mahi mahi, cod) cooked with a bit of vegetable broth (steamed or baked...) add fresh herbs. Then add a bit of yogurt or lo fat mayo make fish salad .... very yum. When trying chicken, use boneless skinless thigh meat - I found breast meat too dry and hard to swallow for months. Cook anyway with lots of added chicken broth/liquids to keep it soft.

Good protein source is to add a hard boiled chopped egg to salad meats (chopped egg added to tuna salad).

Canned meats, Chili (any sort of hamburger or turkey in a soupy sauce). I still find Hamburger pretty easy to eat, but at 4 weeks out I could only handle about 1 oz of any of the denser meats even if they were moist.

Totally agree with the fish recommendation. I have never been a fish person, but it goes down easy.  Tuna, talapia, etc.  White fish is especially easy for me because it has a milder taste. Pico de gallo or Tony Chachere's seasoning are my favorite.  If mayonaise is a problem, try tuna melt.

Chicken was the hardest, especially the breast.  Early on, I was good with ground beef (not the extra lean- you need moisture so I go with ground round).  I'm even better with steak than white meat chicken. I reverted back to buying skinless chicken thighs.  But I started with fish and ground beef.

I had the easiest time with tuna and shrimp and the bay scallops (they are little marshmallow sized), but had a hard time with chicken, beef, etc.  Remember to have lots of food lube (ie sauces) with your meat to help it go down easier.  I still don't do great with straight meat but it's a lot better.  (Yesterday I had the chicken out of a chicken teriyaki bowl...spread out over a few meals.)

I liked eggs and milk...still do. Milk is 1 gm of protein per oz., and Eggs have 12.9 gm of protein per egg. You may need to try them different ways....over medium, in egg salad, eggs au gratin, etc, etc...sometimes scrambled or hardboiled eggs are a bit harder on a new tummy. But if your $$ is tight, those are some of your best/affordable choices for good protein.

Word of warning, stomach surgeries (all types) typically result in an intolerance to eggs. So go easy if you try eggs.

I'm 5 months out and cannot eat them at all, any way you make them. My mom is 2 years post hernia surgery and cannot eat them at all.

I'm jealous of those who can!!! I love eggs
