Why are a lot of people against the band?
VSG on 02/08/12
Originally, I wanted the LapBand because it wasn't cutting anything of my insides, and could be reversed. But then I went to a few meetings and went to my surgeon. He said he preferred not to do them, and when I asked what he thought was best for me, he said the sleeve. I am very happy. I have spoken to a few people that have had them - none are happy.
Because we've had it and we know how ineffective and/or dangerous the band can be. Had I known then what I know now............I never would have gotten the band! Most bandsters end up revising to VSG. If I could afford the surgery, I would have done the same by now.
Check out the failed band forums if you want to know more about why so few like it.
Good luck!
While I was having my surgery another lady was revising her band to the vsg too. She had her band unfilled for 2 years, and still had the same restriction as she did with it full, and could only eat chocolate soups (broth, no chunks) and other slider food or it would get stuck. She did loose 100lbs, but was on a mostly liquid diet for months, from the heavy scar tissue damage she had from the band. She had the vsg even though she was only 120lbs at that point because she didn't want to regain the weight once she removed the band. Her horror story was enough to make me glad I didn't chose it.
I originally wanted the band too and asked my pcp for a referral to the WLS program to have that surgery. She said to keep an open mind about rny, as many of her patients who had had the band didn't do well and ended up having rny later. I went to the info session, not really wanting rny, but willing to think about it, and they talked about the sleeve too. As I did more research, I realized that the sleeve was for me. All that I've heard about the band since then, as well, has backed up what my pcp said about it.

It nearly killed me so I'm pretty much a hater and have zero issue sharing why I hate it. I will NOT bash someone for choosing it. But, I'm not opposed to sharing the pure facts on the band.
But, my personal horror stoy aside, the medical stats on the band are ****ty at best. The stats of long term complications are climbing and the successes are declining. There's plenty of medical stats out to prove that it's a failing surgery. The FDA even has stated that it's not a lifetime product. 10 years max.
