Thinking about experimenting with something...

I know a lot of people here on OH who do just fine with their fluids when they count their protein shakes as part of their liquid.  If that works for you, great.  Keep doing what works for you.

However, I'm noticing more and more that there are still times when I get minor dehydration symptoms... dry mouth, slightly darker urine, and yesterday I actually got dizzy for a few minutes after walking to and from an assembly on the other side of the school with my students, but  that improved drastically the minute I started sipping again.

The above symptoms have me thinking that maybe my body wants more fluid than what I'm giving it.  Since I don't have work today or tomorrow, I think I'm going to really focus on fluids, like I did before going back to work, and see if I can get 64oz in without counting the shakes as part of that number.  I will still keep my goal of 60 grams of protein a day as best I can.  Currently, protein shakes account for about 22 oz of my fluid intake, so basically one more 20 oz of non-protein clears would do it.

Honestly, I may very well get to the end of the day and realize I just can't hold that much right now.  But I figure it's worth a try.

Not a bad idea if you can get it in. I've done better the more liquids and protein I get in. I average over 100 grams of protein and between 100 and 120 oz of fluids (I shoot for 120 but don't alway**** it).

The fluids do get easier as your tummy heals.

I don't think I could possibly get in 100 grams of protein right now... don't think I could stand to drink that much protein each day.  But I definitely want to get closer to that figure when I get used to solids.

And for some reason, today seems to be an easy fluid day.  Maybe it's because I'm trying a different flavor of Vitamin Water Zero... maybe it's because I'm not focused on my students... or a mixture of both plus some healing (hopefully lol)

I think that's a good idea.  My NUT won't allow me to use protein shakes as part of my fluids for the day, she emphatically stated, a shake is a MEAL not a FLUID.  ha ha

Isn't it funny how every NUT and Dr team has different instructions?  My husband was told he could count half of each protein drink towards his fluids... so an 11oz shake was worth about 5oz fluid.  Then there are people here who count it all...

Ultimately, though, I figure we don't all have the exact same needs, for various reasons, and therefore we should keep working on figuring out what works for our own bodies.

The more fluid the better.  64 Oz. is a minimum - not a goal.

One dermatologis told me that you should have half of your body weight in ounces of fluid.  So for example, I am at 254 today, I should have at least 127 ounces of fluid a day to be really properly hydrated.  I never double checked that formula, but it did come from someone I trust.  It has worked pretty well for me.  I always have a 1 liter sports bottle by me.

Wow!  That sounds like a lot... but it makes perfect sense.  Definitely gives me something to work towards.  That would put me at needing about 112oz. a day right now.

Thanks for the insight.  I may not get there anytime soon... but I will definitely keep that figure in mind as I work on this.

If it helps, I try to rewire myself so that when I might normally reach for a grazing food, I reach for my bottle and just take a sip.  I would usually have a bowl of popcorn or nuts or something sitting by me and just snack a little during the day.  When My hand tries to go for that bowl now, I have my water.

I also keep a stock of Mio flavor enhancers - lots of flavors, they are good, and you can make the flavor as week or as strong as you like.  They dont have either that powdery/acidic bite that Crystal light has or the calories.  I like to play with combining the - so for example take the sweet tea flavor and add just a splash of the fruit puch.  Kinda like doing the "suicide" drinks at soda fountains when I was a kid, LOL.

LOL @ the suicide drink idea!  May have to try that :)

I'm still on liquids, so the grazing issue really isn't a problem right now, but I will definitely keep that in mind for when I get to solids.

I agree with you about Crystal Light - too acidic for my tastes. I have several boxes bagged up to give away - kept trying different flavors hoping for a different result - they all taste alike to me.

I also have 5 different bottles of Mio open in the butter keeper compartment of my fridge. Mix and match all day long.
