I don't know what to do, I just finished week 2 and I am so concerned about the rule of not eating and drinking yet, everything I eat is liquid or so soft I need something to get it down.  Am I doing this right?

I would suggest that eating and drinking at the same time flushes food from your stomach, allowing you to eat more.  If you're eating soft food you don't need anything to 'get it down', the same for liquids.
I'm over two years post-op and can easily run into trouble with weight gain if I forget this rule.  Best of luck.

Trust me the first time I ate some dense protein, and tried to drink - i learned a good lesson. I lost all desire to ever try that again.

Im not sure why you need liquid to get soft foods down -seems kind of odd. My soft foods were mainly things like cottage cheese/yogurt, beans, etc - things that went down well.

i agree--- i learned that lesson quickly once I tried to eat and drink at the same time.  Ugh that was uncomfortable (aka it hurt like a son of a gun).  Now it's much easier for me to remember not to drink for 30 minutes after whenever possible (sometimes I cheat and drink at 20 min after)

I was told that during the liquid phase - I didn't have to wait the 30-30.

As others have said, it will be a lot easier to not drink when you're eating dense protein.  I was always someone who drank a 16 oz glass or more of water when I ate, and I have no trouble not drinking now.  The one time I guestimated what time I'd finished my meal, I was way off.  I drank too much water and had what the NUT calls the "blender effect" - everything churning in my stomach.  I had the foamies and by shear willpower, I didn't throw up.  I never want to go there again, so I check the time faithfully now!  If you keep well hydrated throughout the day, the need for fluids when you eat will decrease quite a bit.

When I was early out, I focused on moister proteins, which were easier to get down... Like tuna with a little fat free mayo, or super moist chicken, of homemade lowfat super moist turkey meatloaf.  The farther out I got, the easier it was to eat non-moist foods.  Remember, eat slowly, chew chew chew,  take tiny bites- this will help the food go down easier.

I agree with the others - not sure why you would need something to get down soft foods.

At any rate, the rule against eating and drinking at the same time is mainly to avoid consuming precious volume in your stomach against with liquid when you need that room for protein.

When you get to denser protein, You have to chew, chew, chew.   Remember the old adage about chewing your food 100 times?  You have to chew until its almos****er going down.  If you are staying hydrated you should have enough saliva to do that.

The first few weeks after my surgery, when I started going to restaurants and travelling for work, it was really difficult to not reach for that glass while eating.  Now it has become second nature to not even notice the glass.  Just stay mindful and you will get through it.

I know about not drinking 30 minutes after a meal, but I have also heard people say not to drink 30 minutes BEFORE a meal - is this correct?

Yeah, in my program no drinking 30 minutes before or after.  I am sure others may have a different rule.

The WLS program I went with has the same rule.  Sometimes, if I feel really full, I'll wait and hour or more after eating to drinkanything.
