Anyone develop food allergies at an older age?
Two days ago I ate a plum, and noticed my bottom lip was tingly and a bit swollen, I thought it was weird but didn't really think twice about it. Today I had another one and my bottom lip got tingly immediately and my tongue started to itch and I could feel around my mouth starting to get a little puffy.
I actually prepared to use my epipen, and kept the phone by me to dial 911 b/c it was much the same feeling I get before an anaphylactic reaction to bee stings (which is why I have an epi).
It didn't get any worse, and after several glasses of water I am almost totally back to normal, but I also know that the reaction to the second exposure was twice as bad as the initial one so that is never a good sign. I have a call into my allergist, but just wanted to toss it out there and see if anyone has developed food allergies later in life.

I have a weird allergic reaction to Mango - which I never ate in much quantities until moving here to Cali. But now I have discovered I am allergic. My lips get tingly and puffy - sometimes they get a white tinge to them. It was a weird way to discover I was allergic. My doctor at the time thought it was a little funny as I would get puffy lips - and I complained that they looked better that way then normal. lol
That's whats weird to me, I have eaten plums my whole life, two at a time usually! This was my first one in over a year, and whamo, this happens! I am not going to eat anymore or even handle them until after I talk to the allergist, I hate having to use the epi (and then sit in the ER for hours being "observed").
About 2 months ago, I developed a skin rash. At first just thought it was dry skin patches---all over my sides and stomach. Reviewed all my stuff---detergent, deodorant, soap, etc. No changes. Over the next few days, it spread to my back and started on my legs and arms. Went to my PCP. We really reviewed my diet.
Found that I was eating allot (considering) of shrimp and soy---PCP said that these are 2 of the highest allergy related foods. Stopped both of them while I took the meds.
In order to test it---I added shrimp back into my diet with no reaction. Kind of afraid to add in the soy at this point.
PCP said it was not uncommon for food allergies to develop later in life---meaning I'm old (60) and **** happens. Wasn't EPI serious though. Just an annoying skin crud!!
Hope you're feeling OK!

Yes, this exact same thing happened to me a few years ago. With plum actually. I discovered I'm now allergic to all tree fruits and nuts
Some are worse than others, almonds, cherries, peaches, nectarines and plums are the worst culprits for me. I've never gone into anaphalaxis (sp?) from the allergy though, but my mouth and lips and throat are affected.
