I am into my 16th day on my pre-op liquid diet.  I started Sept 7th at 298/302 (depending on time of day) and now I am at 289!!!  I thought I would be down much more.  Dows this mean the sleeve will not work on me????  I am scheduled for Tues but I feel like maybe I cant do this either...
Just a low moment for me I guess.  Can you all tell me your experiance?

The amount you loose pre-op has nothing to do with what you will see or should expect to see post-op. The two parts have different purposes.  The pre-op diet is so that your liver shrinks making the operation easier for the doctor to do it laproscopically.  If you don't do that he/she would have to do an open surgery which isn't quite as much fun ... lol.

My pre-op diet was only 2 weeks and I lost 13 pounds.  The first 11 were on the first week.  This is water weight mostly.  In the little more than 3 months I have been post op, I have lost another 56 pounds.  I will be honest and say that exercise wise I have failed to keep up with it.  I do get in a lot of walking but that is about all.  I plan at some point getting into something more routine to build muscle but am lacking the finances to get to a gym.  I know ... rationalizations and excuses ... but even without a huge amount of exercise or even very much excercise I am still down a total of 69 pounds.

Compared to some going in I am a lightweight and only need to loose another 7 to 12 pounds.  I am in no hurry.  As long as I am not gaining weight back I am doing great.  I will be happy to get to goal but if it doesn't happen as quickly as I wanted ... I don't really care.  Actually when I started and according to BMI I was at about 36.  I say about as I am not 100% sure of how tall I am.  I am on the shorter side and have always told peopel 5' 8".  Going into the surgeons office I told them 5' 7" knowing that it would boost my BMI.  Even though I was self pay I think that the surgeons still like you to be at least with a BMI of 35 and that extra inch I think put my just below that.  To be honest I am unsure of my accurate height.  I actually think it might be somewhere between those two.

Anyway the point I was going for is that my BMI is now 25.37 if I use 5' 7" and if I use 5' 8" it's 24.63. The weird part is that I hadn't thought about that until just now.  If my height was 5' 7.5" then my BMI is 25.  They say that 25 is the max number for a healthy weight.  18.5 to 24.99 is a healthy weight by BMI standards.  So also by those standards I went from Obesity (class 2) to so very close to a healthy weight in about 3 months.

Until I started answering this question I hadn't realized that.  I am excited tonight but also by those standards I want to be in the middle to low end of that range and not at the top.

Of course I put no weight behind the whole BMI thing ... no pun intended.  It is a bogus number.  Both men and women that are the same height and weight have the same BMI and everyone knows we are built differently.  Women are supposed to have a higher percentage of body fat and the BMI doesn't take that into consideration.  BMI doesn't equal body fat percentage.  Basically when I loose another 10 pounds I will get my body fat percentage calculated and then find out if I am truly in the healthy range and what is next whether it be to loose more or maintain.

Sorry about getting a bit off track.  The point really is that each person here has had a different experience than another.  There is no "typical" experience for anyone.  Some people have higher thresholds for pain.  Some start out bigger than others.  Some loose faster than others.  Some have post op diets that are different than others as well as pre op diets.  Trying to guage yourself based on another's successes and failures is a poor way to go forward.

It's good to come here and get consultation and help from people that all mean well but at the end of the day your journey will be as unique as your fingerprints.  So please don't get discouraged by your current results and if you are ever concerned about whether or not you are doing something correctly or if something doesn't seem quite right to you ... contact your nutritionist, psychologist, or surgeon depending on the area you need assistance in.

I gained on the pre-op Diet.  I was their first to do so.  I explained that I had been doing a very high protien low carb diet before the pre-op diet.  They told me to stay on the shake diet but, they had higher carbs.  Didn't effect getting surgery.  You are WAY ahead of me

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

I have no pre op diet. And having all sorts of food funerals and have gained weight. It better nit mean that the sleeve will be a waste... It won't! Don't worry. I think I have finally had my ah ha moment on OH and it really does all depend on what you put in your mouth and calories in, calories out formula...it works.

Hello JennyDemerice!
DonYou shouldn't get caught up on the pre-op diet loss! I only loss 7-9lbs on the pre-op diet and now 2 months post-op I've lost 70lbs total. I got kind of scared as well but I quickly realized that if you stick to the plan provided by your healthcare team you should be fine.

Take care and best of luck to you! -Larry

I am on day 7 of my pre op and I am a little of 7 lbs down. I am not too concerned. I actually think it is great. 1 lb a day. As soon as pre-op is over my hubs is hiding my scale. For the first 6 months I will weigh in only at my monthly appt. I am a slow loser and I do not want to feel like I am doing something wrong when I know I will not be. I have read so much about stalls and such. Pre-op and post-op your body is going through major chances. I want to give my body a chance to do what it needs to do before I go beating myself up!

Good luck!

Edit to add: I also try not to compare myself to others. If you were on a diet prior to pre-op you may have already shed alot of your water weight.

26 pounds.... stretched over 3 months.  Month 1 just tried to stop gaining, month 2 started to take some off, and half of month 3 was the "real" preop diet.  It truly set me up for a succusful experience, so it is worth all your work.  Once sleeved things really change (for the better) so just keep working your plan and focus on cleaning up your eating habits as much as possible.
