I ignore what my treadmill says because I find it always way overestimates calories.
there are a number of online calorie calculators that can help you figure out what you are burning. Mine was probably a bit high, but your age and weight factor into it. Previously I was not entering my age and weight and the number comes out much lower. I figure I am somewhere between the two extremes.
The one thing I do know if that if you do not set the incline on your treadmill it is like walking down hill and does not benefit you as much. Because the belt is moving your feet along and you are sort of just along for the ride. I set the incline at 3 or 4 and my speed is usually between 3 and 4 on a Precor. Regardless its a nice workout and I definitely leave the gym soaked with sweat.
