Less Sweet Premixed Protein Shakes?

I just bought some Optimum Nutrition Performance Protein Shakes (Milk Chocolate) and they way too sweet. I cannot even swallow them.

I am able to stand the EAS Advantage Carb Control Shakes - Chocolate Fudge, but they have a weird aftertaste, and they are soy protein. My doc wants me to have whey protein if I can (more absorbable, I guess).

I also cannot stand the powdered, 'you-mix' shakes. They get foamy and I cannot get myself to swallow them. I did it for my pre-op liquid diet, but I cannot go back.

Is there another brand out there that doesn't taste like I'm eating pure flavored sugar. YUCK!

Premier Protein is my favorite ready-to-drink.  Sams, Walmart, and Costco all carry them, as do many grocery stores!

I have tried those, and they were too sweet for me, too, actually. I was drinking them months ago pre-op to up my protein.  I'd mix in a cup of milk, but they were still too sweet for me. I've never been much for sweets.

I will say this. From what I remember, Premier Protein is less sweet than these OptNut ones, I think.  They are awful!

I know that there is unflavored protein powder out there, but haven't tried it.  There's also a protein chicken broth that folks have raved about.

Have you tried mixing in PB2 (powdered peanut butter) and/or espresso instant powder?  They might make it more tolerable.

The first year was HARD to find something to fit my palet.  Everything I like presurgery was horrible after.  Recently I bought Jay Robb unflavored protein powder and I've added 1/2 scoop of my "whatever" protein and a full scoop of the Jay Robb and mix.  If I need it to be sweeter I just add some SF syrup.  Of course these are all the powdered kind.

Sarah,

Mix some water in there.  I add twice as much water as instructed to with the powers (any milk will make it too rich and sweet for me).  For the ready made, I water it way down too.  I water everything down (juice, crystal lite like drinks) - it is just my taste buds.  I still have the required servings jus****ered down.

Oh, try blending with lots of ice - you'd get the heavier icy texture instead of the foam

Just make sure you get your protein & vitamins in.

Best,

Layla

I'll have to try that. I water my beverages down, too. I barely squirt any of those water flavorings (Mio, Crystal lite, etc), like Mio, in my water. I just don't like a whole lot of sweet.

If you use the mix them y ourself drinks, don't Use a blender or bullet . This is what makes them foamy. Just stir with a fork.

Adding a teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder helps very well to balance out the sweet N make it more chocolatey.

Jay Robb egg white protein is very mild and not as sweet. Egg protein is just as bio available as isolate.

I have found that some, like the syntax nectars, foam more unless you stir with a fork. Have you tried About Time? The only thing is that they are not RTD, but they do have individual bottles that you fill with water. They are sweetened with stevia rather than the "oses" and so perhaps that would be less sweet for you. Or, there is always the Unjury (and other brands) unflavored, but they aren't RTD either. Regardless of which way you go, I'd recommend that you look into sample packs until you land on one you like. Do not rule out that your tastes may likely change, too.
