Am I being silly?

I believe it is fair to say that surgeons will recommend what they are most comfortable doing or more proficient at.  Look for a surgeon who specializes in VSG and has done thousands of them over many years.  That's the surgeon you want!

I had the exact opposite problem.  I wanted the RNY and they thought that the VSG would be better.  My initial research led me to believe that statistically weight is kept off better and for longer with the RNY.  The RNY has been around longer than the other surgery options.  I think that RNY is better for like if you are diabetic or pre-diabetic but I am no expert.  You make the ultimate decision on what you want to do surgery wise but just remember that they are there to help you.  Take your time research it further and make a decision with their help.

I agree with the diabetic concerns but thats not a problem for me (knocks on wood).

It sounds to me like this is not the surgeon for you.  Time for more seminars?

I am thinking that wouldn't hurt. I have been to 4 surgeons over the past 4 years. It is so hard with my insurance though (Anthem Blue Cross PPO). It is kind of a tricky insurance because it is through the hospital I work for and they don't have a bariatric surgeon. If they did, I'd only have to pay 10% and my insurance would cover the rest. Since I have to go outside of our hospital/medical care group, I have to find a surgeon that takes anthem blue cross ppo and I have to cover 40% of all costs. Plus my insurance states that the surgery can only be done in certain hospitals and none of that include the extra fees that the surgeon charges "out of pocket". My co-workers told me that they have spent around $6,000 so far post surgery. I wish I had the money to go to whatever surgeon I wanted.

I'd say I'm  a bit concerned .... I understand her trying to tell you her opinion and her feeling but to keep trying to change your mind..why??? I'd keep asking myself why I'm sure her stats are impeccable for RNY ... but have you seen her statistics for VSG???? if she is that opposed to VGS...could there be a reason! !!! Best of luck to what ever choice YOU YOUR SELF MAKES!!!! :-)

You really need to research this more.....

From here, my suggestions would be to find a surgeon that does all three procedures (VSG,DS,RNY) and discuss the best option for your personal and medical needs.

As others have mentioned a red flag comes up with a surgeon that wants to do RNY on you with your medical issues.

Also when choosing a VSG surgeon try to find one that actually specializes in working with the SMO with the results that match yours as the VSG is not standardized and not all are created equal and programs and results can differ greatly.

SMO-----> Super Morbidly Obese

Doesn't sound good.... Right.... I learned the term on my consultation form..... not just overweight, fat or obese..... Super !!!

Your BMI (Body Mass Index) is 60.2 which places you firmly in the SMO category.

The bright side is that your doing something about it and many SMO do well with the VSG.

Take some notes from Luvs2Cruise.
