Is VSG alone enough?
I'm a 28yo female and SW was around 280. It has been my dream to get sleeve surgery for the last 6 or so months and it finally happened 3 n half weeks ago. I love it already and know i will be able to lose hopefully after seeing so many successful ppl. I am totally committed. My main question is: i've been reading on so many places how DS is the bettee option since it has a much longer term statistics of keeping the weight off. Please make me feel good about my decision. I have what it takes to keep weight off once it comes off, i know. I am just scared.
I had the sleeve done about 15 months ago, and I lost 215 pounds, and I'm starting maintenance. The sleeve is quite effective if you keep the commitment to follow your plan, and it sounds like you have that commitment. WLS really works. I think you'll be happy with your sleeve.
Some surgeons do the DS as a two-part surgery for people who are very obese, doing the sleeve first and then the intestinal changes later. If you need more help later, you can pursue the DS. I'm not sure how many people find they need more surgery. I'd be interested to see how many people choose to have the DS after the sleeve.
best wishes,
Carol

People tend to be really passionate about the surgery they've chosen. And for good reason! I did a ton of research and chose VSG over the other options as being the right one for me. Now I try not to badger other people with that because what's right for me might not be right for anyone else. Only you can make yourself feel good about your decision and to know it's right for you.
I'm just about 5 months post-op and I'm very glad I picked VSG. I read the RNY and DS boards daily and I'm glad I'm not having the experiences people post about there.

your not a heavy weight and should not really need a ds ,it would be hard to find a surgeon in the Us that would do it on you , in Mexico probably, there are a lot more side effects with the ds , and 3-4 times more supplements to take
the sleeve will work if you stick on plan , there is a reason most surgeons stopped doing the ds and do only the sleeve part , it works for most people that follow there plan and nothing works if you don't , you can gain weight with the ds
the sleeve part is bigger and you can eat a lot more with the ds than the sleeve , long term is what you make it , it is hard to stretch a mature sleeve , and eatting 1- 1 1/2 cups of the right food each meal will keep the weight off
I am 3 days away from my one year surgiversay and have met my doctors goal. I have had zero complications thus far and have not had any regrets my decision for having the surgery. I did my research on all types of WLS before making my final decision. As someone stated above, what one person chooses may not be the right choice for another person. So as long as you're happy with your decision, that's all that matters. During my research, I found that with any of the surgeries, it is possible to gain weight back. You have to stick with the plan you start with. I have 2 friends, one had LapBand and the other had bypass WLS. Both have gained back their weight. The LapBand friend hasn't gained back all of hers but the bypass friend has. They did not stick with eating right and staying healthy. My doctor told me that you can "out eat" your sleeve and stretch your stomach back out. It is only a tool to help you along as you change your lifestyle habits. It is a major change that has to be made. But I'm here to tell you, it is a change that I am SO VERY GLAD I have made!! And it gets easier as you keep at it. You have to eat right, you have to drink a lot of water, and you have to get off the couch and move everyday! I won't lie, it was hard for me at first. But like I said, it gets easier. I promise! Good luck to you! You can do this!!!
