5 Weeks out and still not tolerating any protein shakes

At this point I am eating soft foods, chicken, and turkey.  Should I bother to worry about not tolerating the protein shakes anymore? I am so tired of trying different things and them making me sick.  I have tried whey, soy, rice, egg, and pea.  It does not help that synthetic sugars make me sick as well.

I would ask your doctor, but if you can't tolerate shakes and you are getting enough protein from regular food, I would assume that is okay.

I am about two months out from surgery and have only just been able to tolerate the protein drinks again - the sweetness of them made me retch. I don't know why they all have to be so artificially sweet. You might try adding some of the PB2 powder to your drink. It doesn't really add a peanut butter flavor, but the roasted peanut taste cut the sweetness of the chocolate and helped me to drink the shake.

Good luck to you - I think you'll be better with it soon, like I was - crossing fingers for you!

I have only had one protein shake since surgery - could not gag another one down.  My doctor was fine with it.

I never got to the point where I could tolerate protein shakes.  I drank a lot of chicken broth with unflavored protein powder.  I'd put protein powder in jello, pudding, yogurt, mashed cauliflower,  basically anything I could stir.  I was able to make my protein numbers without shakes.  If you are getting the protein in, then I'd just forget the shakes.

good luck,

Carol

I wouldn't worry about it too much if you're fine with getting your protein from whole foods.  But I might still try a sample every so often to check to see if my tastes had changed.  Just out of curiosity.

You need to make sure you're getting in all your protein daily. I'm 7 weeks out and still need to supplement with 1-2 protein shakes to = 64 grams of protein daily. I'm allergic to Whey protein, so I'm using Jay Robb Egg White Protein Vanilla (0 sugar). I use water, almond milk or fat free milk, 1 Tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa, 1/2 banana for my shakes.

Jay Robb Egg White Protein put me in the ER for dehydration.  It made me so so sick.  I have such strange food allergies that I am ready to just throw in the towel on the shakes.  I am also allergic to almonds. I have an appointment with my NUT tomorrow so we will see if what I am eating is ok enough to just forget about the shakes.

I was the same way post op. I would chew the heck out of cottage cheese. I still have a hard time with them and the only ones I can tolerate are the Premier Protein from Sam's Club and can only drink one every once in awhile.

You need to get @75g of protein per day, less than this and you're protein deficient and one of the major side effects of protein deficiency according to my RD is hair loss. Obviously there are others. Every ounce of meat has 7 grams of protein so if you can eat 11 ounces of meat, or less with other protein supplements like isopure drinks or protein bars then you're ok. Otherwise you will need to work that protein powder in somehow.
