Learned my lesson - DRINK YOUR WATER
Last night I came down with an intense, acute pain on my right side. After trying to treat it as gas and the pain meds left over from surgery 10 days ago, I gave up and went to the emergency room at 3:30am. I live in Oakland, so the E.R. at 3:30am is always an adventure. You have to be PRETTY BAD to subject yourself to that, but I wasn't sure if a staple had ripped, my gallbladder exploded, or some other random complication.
Turned out I had a KIDNEY STONE. The E.R. doc wasn't sure it was relatd to surgery, but often coincided with extreme diet changes (check) and dehydration (check.) I've been drinking my fluids, but usually 6 of the 8oz. It's been hard to drink that much with my new stomach.
HOWEVER, the pain was agonizing. The doc said it's worse than having a baby - but I don't know b/c I'm not a mom. Lesson learned on the fluids...
Has anyone else had a weird complication like this? In my pre-op manual it says the occurrance rate in women is less than 1%. Of course. Gotta go drink some water now! Let me know if there are any other 1%-ers out there...

I've been getting kidney stones since I was 12 years old and I've had 3 since surgery. Fun times!

I never had kidney stones before but I have had them starting about 5 months after surgery. I never had too much problem getting in my fluids. I drink 64-100 oz per day.
I had to go in for a procedure in early December to get an 8.4 mm stone lazered out.
Fortunately, I have never had the abdomen ripping pain. It has always been a dull ache. With the stone in December, I went to the ER with chest pain. They ruled out heart issues and figured the stone was radiating pain through the diaphram.
C-Scan showed the one big stone and 3 more smaller ones on the right side and 1 small one on the left side.
I have not passed a stone that I know of and when the Dr went back in on New Year's Eve, he said he could not find anymore.

Calcium carbonate can be a culprit with stones, which is why it's important that we stick to calcium citrate.
