Topic: Things are starting to get real.

So, I have a surgery date. February 5, 2020. The first day of a new life for me. My mother has purchased plane tickets, husband has let his work know he will be out. This is really happening. I have of course taken this whole journey very seriously but the surgery has always seemed this far off goal while I was jumping through whatever hoop has been tossed my way. Anyhow, I get the details of my 12 day liver shrinking diet from the nutritionist tomorrow.

Questions for anyone out there:

What on earth do I bring to wear in the hospital? Just comfy pants and baggy shirts were my thoughts. Then I was worried the pants might hurt the incisions... My surgeon says I have to do a 3 day stay.

Any tips on things you wish you had brought with you?

Things to remember to have in the house before I leave?

I feel kind of panicky about getting stuff together before I go. I'm sure this is just nerves and normal... I hope.

Thanks for listening or any tips anyone has.

Topic: RE: 7 months post VSG: Looking for my mojo

I will be blunt with you: you need to stop drinking alcohol. Not scale down, not when you are ready. Drinking daily is a path to alcoholism. And hopefully it is not too late.

Alcohol addiction post op WLS is a known issues. Alcohol can affect the way we see food, the way we digest food and absorb it. It can affect our blood sugars, causing food cravings..

When I start drinking alcohol, even a few times a week, not daily, I start gaining weight. Plus my hypoglycemia and RH get much worse.

Alcoh has empty calories, but it also can negatively affect fat loss.

Alcoholism is a serious issue. Hopefully you can still stop and you are not there yet. Alcohol can cause damage to our body, liver and brain.

Hugs.

I understand the fear, ive yo-yo dieted since college--it's always been a struggle. I want to truly overcome the disease that is obesity for good with the help of VSG.

i live in constant fear that i will gain all my weight back. I have a history of doing that in my pre-surgery life.

That's interesting about the green vegetables. Are you chewing your food to apple sauce consistency and waiting 30 mins to drink after meals? If so I would make an appointment with your weight loss doctor. Not being able to hold down any food would be a cause for concern for me.

My diet is perhaps atypical because it's...

  • vegan
  • low calorie (as opposed to low carb or keto)
  • designed with snacks (some people find it easier to stick to 3 meals per day, no snacks)

So what I do may not appeal to you! With that said, here's what works for me: Over time I have identified meals that are about 160 calories, and snacks that are about 80 calories.

You'll find a list of my favourite foods (and other people's) here: https://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/amos/6041034/What-product s-do-you-find-helpful-post-WLS/. Do try the Strong Roots products that I mention there (if you can find them in the US).

Also, here's one of my favourite snacks: vegan hot chocolate!

To ho****er add 1 tbsp/10g protein powder and 1 tbsp/10g cocoa. Stir, then add 100 ml unsweetened almond mild. Add sweetener to taste. Tastes decadent, has only 85 calories, with 12 g protein.

Thank you for your comment!

My eating has been something that I can say that ive truly tracked. Some days I think "maybe my body is in starvation mode and i should eat wayyyy more today and shock my system" but i know that is a slippery slope so i stay away.

I just really, really want to lose all my weight and will stick to my plan to the T. I just want to know my body will do what it's suppose to and let go of the fat like everyone else.

Topic: RE: Mental health with VSG

I would think we'd hear a LOT more about that if it were common. And I agree with some of the other posters that these people were likely dealing with mental health issues before they had surgery. Most clinics have a psychologist on staff who meets with patients before surgery (and/or they refer you to an outside psychologist). I would hope people with these kinds of issues would get screened out.
