Oatmeal and protein

Okay I have been looking for a way to eat my protein,  hot or at least warm. Because I usually make it in a smootie with yogurt and ice. And it has been to cold for that. I made some oatmeal and left it runny and added the protein after. It is not to bad, not great but eatible. Does the heat mess up the protein. I have heard that it does? Any suggestions or ideals welcome.

I've heard it does mess it up and, in fact, on some protein mix packages it says not to add boiling water.  I usually heat my water for my oatmeal to just a slow boil and let it sit for a minute or two to cool down and then add it to my oatmeal/protein mix.  I use AnyWhey protein mix and I can't even taste it in the oatmeal unless it clumps up.  I add it  to my oatmeal and mix it before adding the water and it usually works fine. I added it after I cooked the oatmeal. So hopefully it was okay. It seemed to be okay it wasnt lumpy or anything. Next time I will let the oatmeal cool a little before adding it though. I put the oatmeal in a bowl and added it, but didnt let it cool any.

RieRie, I don’t use much Protein powder now-a-days but back when I did I had a bit of a Trick that worked wonders. A lot of people have trouble getting Those Protein Powders to mix with stuff. Someone at my support group Said she always thought it made stuff taste like Someone had thrown a "Handful of Chalk Dust" In her food or drink. Well the solution? -- Liquid into Dry!

Suppose you are trying to add some to Yogurt or mashed potatoes. (or in your case Oatmeal) Take your scoop, (or actually only ½ scoop) Of the powder and put it in a coffee cup or small bowl. Get a fork, And slowly drip some cool water into the powder while Stirring with the fork. Don’t try to just add the liquid. Attempt to make a very thick paste. Once you’ve got it into a thick paste Then slowly add more drops And stir some more until you get a thinner paste. Keep this up until it is the same consistency As the food you want to add it to. By not having "liquid" per se, the powder can’t clump up And hang onto "bubbles." Even mixing this up ahead of time and keeping it in the fridge is good. Then just take out how much you want and stir it into your food. I have great success this way Adding Protein Powder to- Yogurt, Soups, Oatmeal, Smoothies, polenta, etc… It really helps going into shakes/smoothies. You don’t get that "foam" on the top That, no matter how long you run the blender Just stays forever. It also gets rid of the "powdery" texture That can hang on otherwise. Adding it after the oatmeal is cooked, keeps it at a temp that won’t make it clump. I use the un-flavored when I use it now, but the vanilla in oatmeal was great. This works/worked for me! Hope this helps you!

Best Wishes- Dx

Thanks, I will have to try that. I bought some Isopure at the mall this weekend to drink. It was okay but I cant afford that all the time. So I thought if I can add the whey protein from walmart to oatmeal or hot chocolate it would work. It is funny how before surgery I wouldnt have ate anything I didnt like and now I eat to be healthy instead of what I like. I have even started eating brocolli and it wasnt so bad. It was funny My husband took me to applebees and I ordered a seafood platter. It came with brocolli and rice. And since rice swells in your stomach I ddint think that was good so I tried the brocolli. Wasnt bad, now if I can learn to cook it without ruining it I will be okay. I figureed it was steamed and not boiled so I plan on trying some soon. Wish me luck and Thank you, you are a blessing to us.

easy way to steam broccoli. rinse it well and while it is still damp, put it in a microwave safe container and cover loosely. microwave in 1 minute increments til it is hot, still bright green and a fork pokes in easily into the stem, but not too soft, If you like a little texture to it.  alternative, you can buy a veggie  steamer pretty cheap at walmart, I have one from black and decker and it works well on about everything, and steams most veggies in under 10 minutes, start to finish.

I used to add IDS or Unjury to my oatmeal, coffee when I did supplements in the first month. I remember reading on the Unjury site it was fine as long as you don't go over 130 degrees.

Hope this helps, ~Michelle

I don't have problems getting all my protein in, but in the early months once I was able to tolerate oatmeal, I was anxious to get it back in my diet.  IT's so important to have good grains. To up the protein, I cooked the oatmeal (I use thick cut oats, under cook, strain and "wash" with boiling water to remove all the surface starches--it's so good that way), and then let it cool a little and then sprinkled and stirred in protein powder--if you add slowly and stir constantly it won't clump.  In fact, that's the only way I have ever used protein powders. Just my thoughts.
